SCAFFOLDING
INSTALLATION
FACTORS TO CONSIDER

SITE INSPECTION

Check location for:

1. ground conditions
2. overhead wires
3. obstructions
4. wind condition
5. change in surface elevation

SITE PREPARATION

1. Soil must be level and firm

2. Mud and soft soil should be replaced with compacted
gravel or crushed stone
3. Where mudsills must be placed on sloping ground, the area
should be leveled, if possible by excavating rather than by
backfilling

MATERIALS/ ACCESSORIES

Standards require that every scaffold should have footings, sills or

supports that are sound, rigid and capable of supporting twice the
maximum load to which the scaffold may be subjected without
settlement or deformation.

MATERIALS/ ACCESSORIES

MUDSILLS BASE PLATES

1. Use 2” x 10” planks for mudsills 1. Distribute weight on mudsill and

prolong plank life
2. Lay planks under at least two
supports, either along the 2. Attach scaffold to mudsill and
scaffold or across its width prevent movement due to
impact, vibration or uplift due to
3. Center scaffold base plates on
improper loading
the mudsill and extend mudsills
two feet past the last scaffold
frame
4. Use leveling screws to
compensate for uneven ground
and to ensure that scaffold is
level and plumb

MATERIALS/ ACCESSORIES

LEVELING SCREW

1. Adjust leveling screws up or down so

that scaffold sits level
2. Be careful not to overextend screws

MATERIALS/ ACCESSORIES

FRAMES

1. Frame scaffold must be capable of

supporting 4 times the maximum
intended load;
2. Plumb and level scaffold frames until
connections can be made with ease as
erection progresses;
3. Do not force members to fit;
4. Properly install ties, guys, bracing and/or
outrigger to assure a safe stable scaffold
assembly;
5. Prames and panels must be joined
together vertically by coupling or
stacking pins or equivalent means;
6. Frames and panels must be locked
together to prevent uplift, where uplift
can occur—uplift is the separation of a
frame from the frame below it.

MATERIALS/ ACCESSORIES

DOUBLE DIAGONAL BRACING (DDB)

1. Install DDB on both sides

2. Ensure both sides of the frames have
DDB each time a new layer is to be
added
3. Fasten pins on both sides of DDB
4. DDB is acceptable in place of
midrails when it is between 20 - 30
inches above the work surface
5. DDB is acceptable in place of top
rail when it is between 38 - 48 inches
above the work surface

INSTALLATION PROCESS

FASTENER FOR WALLS (TIES)

1. Use special fasteners for tension

and compression;
2. Install fasteners at intervals of 20’
vertically & horizontally;
3. Install the lowest fasteners 20’
above the ground;
4. Install fasteners perpendicular to
wall as much as possible;
5. Use special anchorage to concrete
when needed;
6. Install fasteners at the poles of the
frames and not on its bracing.

INSTALLATION PROCESS

PLATFORM

1. Install framed platforms at each level

properly secured (tied);
2. Lay two platforms with minimum
spacing in between as possible of not
more than 1 inch;
3. Uncleated platforms must extend
over the end support a minimum of 6
inches;
4. Overlap for each platform on top of
each other must be (30 cm) 12
inches;
5. Maximum platform extension over
the end support shall from 15 cm (6
inches) to no more than 30 cm (12
inches);
6. Scaffolding working surface must be
at least fully planked;

INSTALLATION PROCESS

GUARDRAILS/ TOEBOARDS/ NETS

1. Install guardrails at both sides 200 lbs

and ends and at each level Top Rail
of scaffold exceeding 10 feet
high;
2. Install top guardrails 90cm (3
ft) high or more above the
platform with strength of 200 150 lbs
lbs; Mid Rail
42”+/- 3”
3. Install the mid guardrails at
45cm high above the
platform with strength of 150 50 lbs
lbs;

GUARDRAILS

1. Support guardrails at intervals

not greater than 2.4 m (8 feet);

INSTALLATION PROCESS

TOEBOARDS

1. Install the toeboard around

scaffold when platforms are more
than 1.8 m (6 feet) above ground,
when fall potential is 6 feet or
more, and

NETS

1. In the absence of a toe board,

install safety nets covering the entire
scaffold system.

INSTALLATION PROCESS

STAIR

1. Provide frames for stairs over two to

three spans;
2. Install handrails 90 cm high to 100 cm
above the thread along with
intermediate rails;
3. Width of landing should be at least
1.8 m or more;
4. Provide landing at every 7m in
height or at every turning point;
5. width of stair should be kept at least
40cm or more;
6. Thread width should be 23cm or
more.

REMINDERS

COMPONENTS

1. Scaffold components manufactured by different manufacturers

must not be intermixed, unless they fit together without being forced
and the scaffold’s structural integrity is maintained;

2. Scaffold components manufactured by different manufacturers are

not allowed to be modified to make them fit together, unless a
competent person determines that the resulting scaffold is
structurally sound;

3. Scaffold components made of dissimilar metals must not be used

together unless a competent person has determined that galvanic
action will not reduce the strength of any component below
standard

OTHER SPECIFICATIONS

1. Scaffold above one section high must be provided with safe

access;

2. When hook-on-ladders are used, they must be provided with a rest

platform every 35 feet;

3. The scaffold distance between an insulated 220 volt line must be at

least three meters;

4. Works shall not be permitted during high winds of 30mph or higher;

5. Inspect erected scaffold prior to use;

6. When persons are required to work below scaffolding, you must

Install toe boards and 18-gauge wire mesh between the toe board
and midrail.

SCAFFOLD SAFE
WORK LOAD
PARTS OF SCAFFOLDS

Source: OSHA
SCAFFOLDS SPECIFICATION

The calculation of the maximum uniform load on the scaffold can be

based on three anticipated loads.

Rated Capacity Intended Load Uniformly

Light Duty 25 Pounds per ft2

Medium Duty 50 Pounds per ft2
Heavy Duty 75 Pounds per ft2

For a Medium Duty:

5 x 7 = 35 sf
35 sf x 50 psf = 1750 lbs Maximum uniform load
