1.4 Defect Type Slag, LF


※ Signal was LF. But location is IP.

1.5 Inspection Date 03. Aug. 2017


 Intermittent defect
1.6 Significant Phenomenon  Location : Y=0, Outside root pass
 Big slag inclusion was verified.

2. Defect Root Cause
2.1 AC arc unstable
: Has verified unstable AC arc during welding of this joint. Repeating of invisible arc on/off disturb
floating of slag in the molten pool.

2.2 Enlarged root face during fit-up process


: During fit-up process, fitter did over grind root face to make sure high-low. It was mainly caused
of arc blow then easily to happen IP.
① Grinding to fit-up → Enlarged root face ② Arc blow occur

2.3 Conclusion
: Enlarged root face can be shape to make strong possibility about slag inclusion further unstable AC
arc disturb floating of slag. Complexly happened above two reason was main root cause.

3. Corrective Action
: Completed fitter and welder training about this mechanism. Long-termly will be inspection detail
for Lincoln Power Wave M/C
