CMMS + Scada bridge – D. Lafarge 3

Introduciton - context of the project
• EN-HE-LM section
• maintenance of 118 elevators at CERN
• Uses Infor EAM to manage maintenance
• Critical assets = lifts giving access to the underground machines
(LHC lifts)
• Systematic preventive maintenance plans (12 interventions per
year and per lift).
• CERN machines opration schedule :

Introduction - project description
• LHC lift availability defines the potential working hours inside LHC
machine;
• One preventive maintenance represents 6,5% of unavailability
during a one week stop;
 Condition-based preventive maintenance based on lift usage
would allow to increase by 3% availability of LHC lifts over a year;

 Create a bridge between Computerized Maintenance Management

System (CMMS) and supervision system (SCADA)

CMMS + Scada bridge – D. Lafarge 5

Project genesis
• LHC lifts are monitored through supervision system:

Project genesis
• Condition-based maintenance (every 5000 trips) requires efficient
monitoring of the usage of the lifts;
• CMMS can generate work orders based on meter threshold;
• Lift usage is currently monitored through manual monthly meter
readings :

Outcome – technical solution

Supervision CMM System

System 1 2
Processor

1• Data can be extracted from the supervision system

2• The processor computes data following settings defined by the end-

user from the CMMS interface and updates the meters

Outcome – user screen
• User screen seen from Infor EAM :

Outcome - documentation
• User screen seen from Infor EAM :
• … and the EDMS documentation !
• Quick guide ref. EDMS 1537894
• Detailed user manual ref. EDMS 1537903

Conclusion - Modular & Scalable
• Current solution is designed to easily be extended to cover
other additional data sources.
• Other SCADA systems;
• Smart/networked equipment;
• Databases.

• Different meters can receive data with different intervals.

• No limit in how many meters can be fed with data via this
integration – the limit is how many Preventive Maintenance
Schedules you can/want to manage…

• Important to remember:
Infor EAM is not, and cannot replace, a SCADA system!

Conclusion - huge potential
Automating meter readings means;
• Personnel can be used for more value-adding tasks
• Human input errors can be minimized
• Delays in capturing data can be reduced
• Possibility to capture more meter readings that earlier
could not be financially justified.
• An important step towards a predictive maintenance
where unnecessary maintenance can be eliminated.
