ENVIRONMENT
CERTIFICATION
BUILDING ENVIRONMENT
CERTIFICATION
– A building environment rating system is needed to evaluate the
environmental performance of a building and to encourage market
migration towards sustainable design.

– The rating system must be:

1. Credit-based
2. Flexible
3. Consensus-based and market-driven
BUILDING ENVIRONMENT
CERTIFICATION
– The consulting architect in this area of practice must have much
more than the basic knowledge of Green Architecture and
Environmental and/or Sustainable Design and sufficient knowledge of
the governing environmental investigation processes and procedures
under international protocols such as the Philippine Solid Waste,
Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, DENR administrative issuances and
the like.
What is BERDE?
(Building for Ecologically Responsive Design
Excellence)

– In 2009, the BERDE Program was established by the Philippine Green

Building Council (PHILGBC) as an appropriate response to the
Philippine building industry’s need to proactively address the
negative impacts of climate change.

– The program was established to develop the Philippines’ own

national voluntary green building rating system to facilitate green
building projects in the country, inspire confidence in the industry,
and build trust in the industry.
What is BERDE?
(Building for Ecologically Responsive Design
Excellence)

– The BERDE Green Building Rating System is developed under

the BERDE Program. BERDE is a tool to assess, measure, monitor, and
certify the performance of green building projects above and beyond
existing national and local building and environmental laws,
regulations, and mandatory standards.

– BERDE is recognized by the Philippine government, through the

Department of Energy (DOE), as the National Voluntary Green
Building Rating System.
PHILGBC
(Philippine Green Building Council)

– was incorporated on March 22, 2007 as a national non-stock, non-

profit organization that promotes the sharing of knowledge on green
building practices to the industry to ensure a sustainable
environment.
PHILGBC
(Philippine Green Building Council)

– The Council’s opinions are valued in the areas of policy development,

business development, and environmental expertise. And over the
years, a growing number of individual professionals and over two
hundred and fifty (250) corporations and organizations from the
different sectors of the building industry are currently members of
the largest and greenest building initiative in the country.
GREEEN
(Geared for Resiliency and Energy Efficiency for
the Environment)

– a total effort of the Philippine Green Building Initiative, Inc., (PGBI)

– grEEEn is a Green Building Rating System that will provide a

voluntary, code-based, environment-responsive set of criteria to
evaluate buildings that are newly constructed and undergoing major
renovations.
PGBI
(Philippine Green Building Initiative)

– a non-profit, voluntary group of professional associations involved

with the built-environment who share a common concern on the
impacts of global warming and climate change.

FOUNDING MEMBER ASSOCIATIONS:

– American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning
Engineers Philippines Chapter (ASHRAE Philippines)
– Heritage Conservation Society (HCS)

FOUNDING MEMBER ASSOCIATIONS:

– International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS)
– Integrated Institute of Electrical Engineers (IIEE)
– Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID)
– Philippine Society of Ventilating, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigerating
Engineers (PSVARE)
– United Architects of the Philippines (UAP)

BERDE CERTIFICATION
(Building for Ecologically Responsive Design
Excellence)

– BERDE Certification is the formal assessment, rating, and certification

process for projects of the BERDE Program. It is conducted in a third-
party assessment process to ensure a credible, independent,
impartial, and objective assessment, rating, and certification of
projects under BERDE.
BERDE CERTIFICATION
(Building for Ecologically Responsive Design
Excellence)

Who will certify my project?

– The PHILGBC will certify the project based on the outcomes from the
assessments during the BERDE Certification process.
BERDE CERTIFICATION
(Building for Ecologically Responsive Design
Excellence)

Who will certify my project?

– The PHILGBC or its authorized assessment body will facilitate and

conduct the assessment, rating, and certification process. The
PHILGBC builds trust and confidence in the system by managing and
addressing conflicts of interests between the project, the project
team, and the assessment team assigned for the project.
BERDE CERTIFICATION
(Building for Ecologically Responsive Design
Excellence)

– BERDE has four major rating schemes:

1. New construction,
2. Retrofits and Renovations,
3. Operations, and
4. Existing buildings.
BERDE CERTIFICATION
(Building for Ecologically Responsive Design
Excellence)

– The number of points a project earns in each of the categories (i.e.

water, land use ecology, etc.) determines its level of accreditation;

highest is five stars

the lowest is one star.

Why you need BUILDING
CERTIFICATION?
– Rating systems provide developers with a quantifiable basis for
claiming to be green. It’s a mechanism to prevent greenwashing.

– Greenwashing is the practice of making an unsubstantiated or

misleading claim about the environmental benefits of a product,
service, technology or company practice. Greenwashing can make a
company appear to be more environmentally friendly than it really is.
Why you need BUILDING
CERTIFICATION?
– A green-certified building is also cost-effective and is a sound
economic investment. It attracts customers because of its attractive
low-energy use, among other things. Green building features have
generally a five-year payback period.
GREEN BUILDING

– refers to a structure, and its subsequent use, that is ecologically

friendly and resource efficient
