This document discusses Dr. Rodolfo Jara Mesa, a gynecologist from Iloilo City, Philippines who passed away in 2003. He made significant contributions to preventing STDs in the Philippines in the late 1990s and 2000s. The document also discusses Mesa's invention, the Mesa Rhythmic Indicator, a natural family planning method using abstinence during fertile periods. It was a low-cost alternative to birth control devices and helped address overpopulation concerns as the Philippines' population doubled between 1960 and 2000.

Dr. Rodolfo Jara Mesa • Dr. Rodolfo was born in Lapaz, Iloilo City
• He passed away in 2003.
• He is a gynecologist.
• He is a leading authority in the field regarding STDs in the Philippines.
• He has done significant contribution in the field of STD prevention in
the Philippines in the late 90s and early 2000s. • In 1960, population of the Philippines is approaching 30million.
• Ten years later (1970), our population increased 5 million (16.6%)
• In the year 2000, the Philippine population skyrocketed to more than
double at 85 million Philippines. More than double in just last 30 years!
• August of 2007 census, NSO updated the record to 89 million. And
today (2018), there are 98 million of us by conservative estimate. Effects of Overpopulation • Intensive factory farming to support large populations. It results in human threats including the evolution and spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria diseases.
• Depletion of natural resources, especially fossil fuels.
• Loss of arable land and increase in desertification
• Increased levels of air pollution, water pollution, soil contamination
and noise pollution. The Mesa Rythmic Indicator • Patented invention under Philippine Patent No. 4824
• This invention indicates accurately the pregnancy-free period of a
woman, rendering the use of birth control devices unnecessary.
• Cost effective method through use of abstinence and scheduled
intercourse.
• In 1968, the invention was endorsed by Dr. Alan F. Gutmacher,
president of the Planned Parenthood World Population based in London, England. The Mesa Ryhtm Indicator • A circular palm-held, three layer cardboard device.
• For women who don't have a regular 28-day cycle.
How does it work? • To determine a woman’s fertile period or unsafe days, let her observe her monthly menstrual cycles and determine the longest and the shortest cycles. • The formula: Shortest cycle minus 18 and longest cycle minus 11. • For example, if the shortest cycle is 28 days and the longest is 33, then 28 minus 18 equals 10 and 33 minus 11 equals 22. Therefore, do not make love from the 10th to 22nd day after menstruation. • “I remember my first visit there as a 10-year-old boy in the summer of 1960. I remember seeing children swimming in the sea off Manila Bay and the Pasig River, which were not yet murky then.”
“I remember riding with my parents on a De Sotto car running through
fresh air along the tree-lined road to Novaliches.” Dr. R.J. Mesa • The Philippine situation reminds us of the English economist Robert Thomas Malthus, who, in 1798 warned: “Population tends to increase faster than the supply of food available for its needs.” Thank you!
