MANUFACTURING OF LPG CYLINDERS
• With a view to diversify and as a part of the LPG supply chain,
Sh. R K. Batra took up the manufacture of LPG Cylinders by
forming a company in the name and style of M/S Surya Shakti
Vessels Private Limited (SSVPL) in 2001.
• This unit has an installed capacity to manufacture 1.5 million
cylinders per year. The unit has 11 variety inclusion of LPG
Cylinders for oil companies and parallel marketer of Nepal,
Bhutan, Tanzania, Kenya .
About SSV
• Surya Shakti Vessels Private Limited is a Private Limited
Company managed by a board having four Directors .
• The unit has been set up with all-
modern facilities and equipments
has its own 100% capacity power
back up .

 Laboratory is well-equipped as per

requirements of relevant standard
including arrangement for drop test
& impact test .
• During Inspection and Testing of prototype batch we
used the material according to IS 6240 & found the
following results .
14.2 kg Results

Particulars Required Observed

Yield Strength 240 MPa Min. 330-337

Ultimate tensile strength 350-450 MPa 368-441

Elongation 25% Min. 32-38.5

Bend Test 3T satisfactory

Burst Test (% VOL. EXP.) 20% Min. 26-32

• We found the following results During testing
14.2 KG (HTSS) Testing Results
Particulars Required Observed
Yield Strength 345 MPa Min. 362-483
Ultimate tensile strength 490-610 MPa 525-566
Elongation 18% Min. 35-38
Bend Test 2T pass
Burst Test (% VOL. EXP.) 20% Min. 25%

Additional Test

Particulars Observed
Integrity Impact Test Satisfactory
Drop Test Satisfactory
INTEGRITY IMPACT TEST
(A) Flat surface impact test (Un Pressurized cylinder):
• Two Cylinder filled with 14.2 kg water & dropped
from 3.1 meter height axis parallel to the flat steel
surface & 45° to the cylinder axis.

OBSERVATION
• Both cylinders visually examined for damage
according to IS 16054 .
• After that one cylinder subjected to B.T. at a
pressure of 92.5 kgf/cm² and volumetric expansion
was 24.3%.
• One cylinder after completion of Fatigue test of
12000 cycle at a pressure of 25 kgf/cm² subjected
to B.T. & burst at a pressure of 91.2 kg/cm² &
volumetric expansion was 26.1%
(B)Flat surface impact test (Pressurized cylinder):-
• Cylinder filled with water of 14.2
kg & pressurized to 21 kgf/cm²
pressure then dropped from 3.1
meter height axis parallel to the
flat steel surface & 45° to the
cylinder axis.

OBSERVATION
 On completion of both impacts
cylinders were checked for leakage
& found satisfactory.
(C) Edge surface impact test (Un Pressurized cylinder):-
• Cylinder filled with 14.2 kg water & dropped from
1.2 meter height axis parallel to the edge
surface & impact separated by 45° with the edge
perpendicular to the cylinder axis.
OBSERVATION
• Two cylinders visually examined & the damage
observed is below the rejection criteria
according to IS 16054 .
• After that one cylinder subjected to B.T. at a
pressure of 86.2 kgf/cm² and volumetric
expansion was 25.5%.
• One cylinder after completion of Fatigue test of
12000 cycle at a pressure of 25 kgf/cm² subjected
to B.T. & burst at a pressure of 87.5 kg/cm² &
volumetric expansion was 24.3%
(D)Edge surface impact test (Pressurized cylinder):-
• Two Cylinder filled with water of
14.2 kg & pressurized to 21kgf/cm²
pressure then dropped from 1.2
meter height axis parallel to the
edge surface & impact separated
by 45° with the edge perpendicular
to the cylinder axis.

OBSERVATION
 On completion of both impacts
cylinders were checked for leakage
& found satisfactory.
Drop Test
• Cylinder fitted with water of 14.2 kg then pressurized to a pressure of
21 kgf/cm² dropped twice from a height of 1.2 meter in following five
orientation.
1) Cylinder axis parallel to flat steel surface .

2) Cylinder axis perpendicular to surface

foot ring strikes on the flat steel surface
3) Cylinder axis 45° to surface V.P. Ring
strikes on the flat steel surface.

4) Cylinder axis perpendicular to

surface V.P. Ring strike on flat
steel surface.

5) Cylinder axis 45° to surface foot ring

strikes on the flat steel surface.
Observation
• After each drop cylinders were visually examined for the signs of
damage against the rejection criteria.

• After that one cylinder subjected to B.T. at a pressure of 88.7

kgf/cm² and volumetric expansion was 22.6%.
• One cylinder after completion of Fatigue test of 12000 cycle at a
pressure of 25 kgf/cm² subjected to B.T. & burst at a pressure of
87.5 kg/cm² & volumetric expansion was 24.9%.
Results Summary
Cylinder subjected to Burst test :-
Particulars Observed Results

Burst Pressure 86.2-92.5 Satisfactory

Volumetric Expansion 22.6-25.5 Satisfactory

Cylinder subjected to Burst test after Fatigue :-
