DESCRIPTION
OF MULTIPLE
SCLEROSIS
Multiple Sclerosis also known
as MS is an inflammatory
disease of the Central Nervous
System categorized as an
autoimmune disease.
MS has 4 various
categories Relapsing-
remitting MS (RRMS),
Primary progressive MS
(PPMS) and Secondary
progressive MS (SPMS),
and Progressive-
Relapsing MS (PRMS).MS
is a disease in which the
immune system eats
away at the protective
covering of nerves.
BODY SYSTEM
INVOLVED-
CENTRAL NERVOUS
SYSTEM
MS is a long-lasting disease
that start in the CNS that affects
your brain, spinal cord, and the
optic nerves
The brain and spinal cord contains billions of nerve
cells called neurons and glial cells that help you
navigate emotions, movement, behavior, touch, and
balance(3).

NORMAL ANATOMY
Myelin wraps around the
axon to make signals fire
faster from the CNS. At
the other end of the axon,
the axon terminals
transmit the electro-
chemical signal across a
synapse to go to other
organs or cells.
According to Martini & Bartholomew the CNS
integrates and coordinates sensory processing and
motor transmission throughout the body (2)

NORMAL PHYSIOLOGY
The CNS also deals with
your memory,
intelligence, and your
emotions. The brain is
responsible for
integrating most sensory
information and
coordinating body
function, both
consciously and
unconsciously.
MECHANIS
M OF MS
The body’s immune
system mistakes the
neurons myelinated axon
in the CNS as a foreign
pathogen which causes it
to attack; destroying the
myelin and the axon in
variable degrees.
MS interferes with the electrical
signals between the brain, spinal
cord, and other parts of the body.
This results in the brain not being
able to fire signals throughout the
body properly
Every time MS attacks it
causes more and more
scar tissue. This causes
more physical problems
such as muscle spasms,
blindness, immobility and
much more.
Unfortunately there is no
PREVENTION known way to prevent
MS.
Eating a balanced
diet

TREATME Although MS cannot

be treated it is
Staying active
NT
unique ways to slow
down progression.

Staying cool
CARE PLAN

According to APRN Nancee Spillman “the

goal of treatment for a multiple sclerosis
patient is to keep them from getting
depressed. We would also need to
shorten exacerbations and relieve
neurologic deficits so that the patient
can resume a normal lifestyle. Help keep
the MS patient active, positive thoughts
and work on depression and fatigue etc”
