SHS Orientation
For Grade 10 Students
What is Senior High School?
Senior High School (SHS) refers to the last
two years of the K to 12 Program, namely
Grades 11 and 12.
What can SHS do for you?
• Just like learners your age all over the world, you too will benefit from an
education system suited for the 21st century.
• The things you will study in SHS are based on your interests. SHS will be
your stepping stone to be what you want to be after high school.
• SHS equips you with the knowledge and skills to pursue a better life and help
your family and community.
Can I go straight to college when I finish
Grade 10?
• No, because the law, RA 10533 or the Enhanced
Basic Education Act, now prescribes SHS as part
of compulsory basic education. You will need to
go through it in order to graduate High School.
What if I don’t want to go to SHS?
A. Academic Strand
a. Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM)
b. General Academic Strand (GAS)
c. Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS)
d. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
Accountancy, Business and Administration
(ABM) Strand
• It focuses on the basic concepts of financial management, business
management, corporate operations and all things that are accounted for.
• This will lead you to careers on management and accounting which could
also be sales manage, human resources, marketing director, project officer,
bookkeeper, accounting clerk, internal auditor, certified public accountant
and a lot more.
• You will be able to analyze assets, interpret profitability, understand financial
positions and prepare audit accounts.
General Academic Strand (GAS)
• You will experience a different curriculum from JHS (more advanced, more
specialized)
• You will take specialized subjects which may be supplemented by a
practitioner, or working professionals in industry.
• You will undergo work immersion and research where you will have to apply
what you have learned from your different subjects.

How can I choose the right track and
strand for me?
Your teachers, parents, and guidance counselor can help you choose your
track. You can base your choice on your interests or aptitude and the career you
want to pursue after SHS.
If you opt to pursue STEM, you must have at least general average of 85
and no grades in Mathematics and Science not lower than 85.

• Employment opportunity - Availability of job in the locality and/or nearby
areas
• Financial capability of parents - Availability of financial resources to sustain
the needs to finish the preferred course.

above the regular received salary of common workers
