presenting it through digital media effectively .
THE IMPORTANCE OF STORY TELLING

 We get the opportunity to step into another person’s shoes


and see what they see.
 We get to learn about all the fascinating things going on right
under our noses that we never knew were there.
 We need to tell stories to understand the world .
 They asserting our fundamental human instinct to engage
with the world.
 It’s a way to learn something, to feel something, to connect
with strangers.
 They help make sense of things that otherwise wouldn’t make
much sense.
POURQUOI TALES
WHAT IS A POURQUOI TALE?

 Pourquoi means “why” in French.


 also known as an origin story or etiological tales
 Fictional narrative
 They are passed on orally, through story telling.
 It explains why something is the way that it is.
 The “why” of certain customs, physical events, or animal
behavior
 Why a snake has no legs or why a tiger has strips

THE FORM OF A POURQUOI TALE

 It is a short story.
 Since is passed on orally, it is easier to tell the shorter it is.
 The setting emphasizing a culture or country.
 Characters are either people, animals, or nature.
 The conflict is centered on change.
THE FEATURES

 Patterned beginnings emphasize time of the story.

 Main characters will change by the end of the story.
 Conflict is one-dimensional and centers on how
something has changed to the way it is now.
 Plot is not developed but linear, revolving around the
character’s actions to solve the questions of why or
how.

WHAT THE PROJECT ENTAILS

 You will work with your fellow classmates to join two worlds –
the ancient world of pourquoi storytelling with the modern
technological 21 st Century in relation to the novel Things Fall
Apar t.
 With your group you will write a pourquoi story of your own.
 Then you will bring the story to life digitally.
 You will choose from the tools I have listed or you may select
another tool (as long as you approve it with me first).

This is a group assignment, but you will NOT necessarily receive


the same grade as your groupmates. Your score will be
determined through self, student, and teacher evaluations.
GROUP PROJECT

 You will choose your groups, three students per group.


 Once you have your group please inform Ms. Zavala
 As a group you all will:
 Decide what character from Things Fall Apart you will create a
Pourquoi Tale (Origin Story).
 Write that characters story.
 Choose what Digital Storytelling tool to use from the list I provide.

You will have the rest of the class to work on this in your groups. Next
class you will all be presenting.
Presentation should be at least 5-10 minutes long.
Students NOT presenting will be critiquing the presentations. This is for
a grade so make sure to listen to presenters with respect!
GRADING

 Each student will be graded on:


 their collaboration skills with their group,
 Showing that you can work together efficiently and fairly splitting up the
work.
 their ability to understand the assignment
 Which is to write a back story and create a digital presentation of the
story.
 presenting it to the class
 Creating a video that clearly explains the characters back story
 critique other students work
 Giving constructive feedback to each groups work through the feedback
form
