NEED FOR THE STUDY
1. Growth in mutual fund industry in the last 10 years.
2. India has a vey saving culture as Indians save rupees 20-30 lakh crore every year, which
indicates immense scope for channelizing this saving into MF industry.
3. Asset base of mutual funds as a percentage of GDP IS JUST 11%, while the world average is
62%, scope is present in this field.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Mutual funds are the avenues for common investors to reap the benefits of share market
performance. The problem is to study and measure the awareness level of people regarding
mutual funds. The study include analysis of the investors on the basis of their investment
objectives, age etc. it also examined the position of mutual funds among investment avenues
available for the investors.
LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
1. The research is confined to Bhimtal, so it can be said that the study was regionally biased.
2. Results are just an indication of present scenario and may not applicable in the future.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Jambodekar (1996) conducted a study to find out the direction of investment in the mutual
funds by investors. The study showed that the investor’s main priority of investment are open
ended schemes. The study also revealed that most of the investors generally used newspapers
as the main source of information.
Black (2006) studied the impact of investor’s lifestyle and other environmental factors on their
selection of financial products and distribution channel along with the product image.
Kozup (2008) signifies that if the investors are provided with high level of information and that
information is presented in an effective manner it has influenced the investors desire of
choosing mutual fund.
Walia and Kiran (2009) conducted the survey to analyse the risk and return perception of
investors regarding mutual funds. The result showed that professionalism and good customer
services are the two factors that had an immense impact on the investors perception regarding
mutual fund.
Saini (2011) conducted a study in India to gauge the investors perception about the mutual fund
in India. The factor that had been taken into account in the research were expertise, safety,
liquidity, tax benefit and regular savings. Factors that attracts the investors the most were the
funds past performance and stability of return.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
1. To know the awareness of mutual fund among potential investors.
2. To evaluate the position of mutual fund among investment avenues available for investors in
the market.
3. To come up with recommendation for investors and mutual fund companies in India.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
1. Research design- descriptive research
2. Sampling techniques- convenience sampling and judgemental sampling.
3. Sample size- 254
(total population 750, confidence level 95% and margin of error is 5%)
4. Data collection techniques-
Primary data- questionnaire
Secondary data- books, websites and articles.

Deals with introduction of topic. Along with it deals with the problem statement and limitation of
study.
