How could Samsung become the world’s best company
in semiconductor production?
From humble beginnings to a global semiconductor powerhouse, our
relentless passion for innovation has been the common thread throughout our
history
History
Samsung entered the electronics industry
in the 1960's with the formation of
several electronics focused divisions. The
initial electronics divisions included
Samsung Electronics Devices, Samsung
Electro-Mechanics, Samsung Corning,
and Samsung Semiconductor &
Telecommunications. Samsung built their
initial facilities in Suwon, South Korea,
in 1970, where they started producing
black and white television sets.
Planting the Seeds

The semiconductor industry can be risky, with its cyclicality and

need for intense capital investment.
Against all odds, it was the foresight of Samsung’s founder, Byung-
chul Lee, that laid the groundwork for Samsung’s semiconductor
business.

 1974 - Samsung Electronics acquires Hankook

Semiconductor;
 1975 - IC mass production starts for LED wrist watches;
 2000 - Establishes Hwaseong Campus

History Begins
Nine years into the venture, Samsung’s turning point came when it
successfully developed its first memory chip, the 64Kb DRAM,
making South Korea the third country in the world to own advanced
VLSI technology.

Creating the Future (1983 -2017)

It’s been an incredible journey so far, but the endless possibilities still
excite us. Samsung’s semiconductor business will continue to open
new horizons in this digital era,
where chips smaller than a fingernail inspire the world to live better,
learn smarter and come closer
How could Samsung become the world’s leading
manufacturer of mobile phones?
In the past year and a half, Samsung, a company that makes everything from
dishwashers to smartphones, has become one the most powerful and recognizable
names in tech.
