Reactions
COMBINATION (Synthesis)
REACTION
A reaction when 2 or more reactants
combine to form a single product. The
general formula for this reaction is :
DECOMPOSITION REACTION
In this reaction, a single reactant
breaks down into simpler ones. (2 or
more products). This is the reverse of
combination reaction. The general
formula for this reaction is:
SINGLE DISPLACEMENT (Replacement)
REACTION:
This is when one element replaces another
element from a compound. The more
active element takes the place of the less
active element in a compound. The general
formula for this reaction is:
DOUBLE DISPLACEMENT REACTION
(Metathesis)
This is when the positive ions (cations) and
negative ions (anions) of different
compounds switch places, forming two
entirely different compounds. The general
formula for this reaction is:
COMBUSTION (Burning) REACTION
This is when oxygen combines with a
hydrocarbon (compound containing
hydrogen and carbon) to form a water and
carbon dioxide.
ACID-BASE REACTION
This is a special kind of double
displacement reaction that takes place
when an acid and base react with each
other. The H+ of the acid reacts with the
OH- of the base forming water. The other
product is salt.

Q1. In the second chemical reaction,
how many reactants are used? How
many product/s is/are formed?
Two reactants were used, one product
was formed in the second chemical
reaction.
Q2. In the third chemical reaction, how
many reactants are used? How many
product/s is/are formed?
One reactant was used, two products
were formed in the third chemical
reaction
Q3. In the first chemical reaction, what
changes did copper and iron undergo
during the reaction? What can you
conclude about iron?
Copper was replaced by iron.
Q4. In the 4th chemical reactions, how
many reactants and products are
involved? What kind of substance are
they?
2 reactants and 2 products were
involved, they were compounds
Q5. In the fifth chemical reaction, both
the reactants and products are
compounds made up of positive and
negative ions, what did you notice with
the pairing of the positive and negative
ions in the reactant and product side?
The reactants exchanged positive and
negative ions on the product side.
