MOMENTUM
All moving objects have what
Newton called a “quantity of
motion.”
Momentum
Anything which is moving has MOMENTUM.
The amount of momentum it has depends on:-

1. MASS
2. VELOCITY
MOMENTUM
•The momentum of a moving object
can be determined by multiplying
the object’s mass and velocity.
MOMENTUM
•Momentum = Mass x Velocity

p = mv
MOMENTUM
•Since mass is measured in
kilograms and velocity is measured
in meters per second, the unit for
momentum is kilogram-meters per
second (kg x m/s).
MOMENTUM
•Like velocity, acceleration, and force,
momentum is described by its
direction as well as its quantity.
•The momentum of an object is in the
same direction as its velocity.
Which has greater momentum?
Find the momentum of the following
1.
0.06 kg
30 m/s

momentum = mass x velocity

= 0.06 x 30
= 1.8 kgm/s
2.

40 000 kg
20 m/s

momentum = mass x velocity

= 40 000 x 20
= 800 000 kgm/s
3.

70 kg
1.5 m/s

momentum = mass x velocity

= 70 x 1.5
= 105 kgm/s
