Introduction
What is value analysis ?
 Value analysis is an organised approach to identify unnecessary costs
associated with any product, material, part, component, system or service by
analysis of function and efficiently eliminating them without impairing the
quality functional reliability or its capacity to give service.
 It is a creative approach to eliminate the unnecessary costs which add neither
to quality nor to the appearance of the product. It is a systematic application of
techniques to identify the functions of a product or a component and to provide
the desired function at the lowest total cost.

What is connecting rod ?
 A connecting rod is a rigid member which connects a piston to a crank or
crankshaft in a reciprocating engine. Together with the crank, it forms a simple
mechanism that converts reciprocating motion into rotating motion.
 Today, the connecting rod is best known through its use in internal combustion
piston engines, such as automobile engines.
Product
Material of connecting rod
 Generally there are a few materials that are commonly used in the creation of
connection rods. Like steel alloy, aluminum and titanium.
 The connecting rods are usually made of steel alloys like 42CrMo4, 43CrMo4,
44csr4, C-70, EN-8D, SAE1141, etc. Connecting rods are usually drop forged
out of a steel alloy. Aluminum and titanium are both materials that are also
used in the manufacturing of connecting rods for performance vehicles.
 Sometimes mixtures of materials are used to prepare connecting rod. Such as
aluminum and titanium. It is directly taken out from casting by bending,
twisting and shaping.
Value analysis of product
1. Orientation/Preparation
Objective is to reduce mass and increase life of connecting rod.

2. Information
Data from various departments is collected regarding the selected connecting
rod model.

3.Analysis
Analysis and identification of functions of various sections of connecting rod.
Value analysis of product
4.Innovation/creativity
In this phase finite number of alternative models are form based on
requirements and objectives define in previous stages of value analysis.

5. Evaluation
Results of alternative models were analyzed and optimum model is selected
which satisfies requirements and needs of customer within lowest possible cost.
In this case MODEL 3 is selected as optimum model.
6. Implementation and monitoring
After finalizing the model, all the changes that need to be done for production
are made which includes training of workmen, rescheduling, process planning
and overcoming other related problems in production process. In monitoring,
results of final product are compare with original expectations and corrective
actions are suggested for next project.
Conclusion
All the factors regarding value analysis of connecting rod which includes defining
value analysis and its steps, connecting rod working and its material properties and
complete value analysis process is discussed successfully.
