Introduction to Hospitality

 The word hospitality is derived from hospice, the medieval


house of rest for travelers and pilgrims.

 The word hospice is related to hospital.

“The reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or


strangers with liberality and good will.”
(Oxford English Dictionary)
Definition of Hospitality

The hospitality field, by definition, is a


service industry. Its task is to create
shareholder wealth by servicing and
satisfying guests. Industry segments
include, among others: hotels,
restaurants, private clubs, managed
food service, event planning, tourism
related businesses, and travel
providers.
Hospitality Information System (HIS)
 Hospitality information systems are a collection of
components that work together to provide information
help in the operation and management of a hospitality
organization.
 Information technology systems in use in hospitality
industry are primarily computers and telephone systems.
 Some software applications and hardware are in use in
various sectors of the hospitality industry.
 In the hospitality industry, computers and telephone are
used to provide guest services, to make business more
effective, and to perform decision-making functions for
managers
Hospitality Information System (HIS)

 The computers, communication equipment and other


technology in use in information system are called information
technology (IT).
 It gives hospitality managers an advantage because they reduces
the chance of error. These system allow the managers to control
an entire property at the touch of bottom.
 Hospitality information system are also mechanisms that deliver
processed data to management to facilitate the decision making
process.
 Hotel industry are become to use technology to meet the needs
of guest and hotel employee peers. The most commonly used
technology systems in hotels are PMS and CRS

 In the area of telecommunications, hospitality information


system have proven to help enterprises generate additional
revenue through facsimile (fax) machines, modern
connections, conference calling and videoconferencing.

 HIS provide entertainment to guestrooms through on


demand movies, video games and videotape, and premium
channel selections.

Computer Reservation System (CRS)

 It is also known as central reservation system.


 CRS are primarily used for inventory management by
airlines, hotels, and other tourism and hospitality
enterprises.
 It is a computerized system to store and retrieve
information.
 It conduct transaction related to air travel, hotel, car rental
or other activities.
 It is originally designed and operated by airline.
 A CRS is the backend office system of the booking engine.
Computer Reservation System (CRS)

 It also enables you to administrate rates and availabilities


comfortably and easily as well as evolution of all incoming
booking
 Get an overview of the complete booking performance of
e-distribution.

Global Distribution System (GDS)

 Also called automated reservation system (ARS)


 A world wide computerized reservation network
 It is as a single point of access
 For reserving airlines seats, hotels, rental agents, online
reservation sites and large corporation
 CRS operates that book and sell tickets for multiple
airlines are known as global distribution system.

 Galileo GDS Booking
 World span
 They are owned and operated as joint venture by major
airline, car rentals companies and hotel groups.
 Main fact that it costs airlines money to go through a GDS
process
Property management system (PMS)
 It is also known as Hotel Operating System (HOS).
 PMS is a generic term used to describe applications
of computer hardware and software used to manage
a Hotel.
 It is a well organized management system which
manages operating activities of the hotel. Not only
this, it has a systematized mechanism that oversees
and coordinates the relationship with the customer
and services.
 Under business terms may be used in real estate,
manufacturing, logistics, intellectual property,
government of hospitality accommodation
management.
Benefits Of Property Management System
 There are many hotels which are still using the
manual system of reservation agents and
booking on arrival, the hotel property
management software offers online reservation
and booking system. This system allows the
customers to reserve and book their rooms in
advance from any part of the world.
 Being an automated system, the online
reservation and booking solution update the
customer with the confirmation of their booking
within seconds and also updates the system with
accurate number of unoccupied rooms. This

Point of Sales System (POS)
 Any point where a sales transactions can occur in a hospitality
organization, such as restaurants, bars can be considered a point
of sale.
 A POS system is an integrated configuration of hardware and
software that connects of the house operations to the back of the
house accounting functions.
 POS system include a data base function whereby guest contact
can be collected and stored.
 The POS is referred to as the point of service because it is not
just a point of sale but also a point of return or customer order.
 Today POS software may include additional features to cater for
different functionality, such as inventory management, CRM,
financial, warehousing etc.
