SVM 3000 - Stabinger Viscometer
with Xsample 360/460

2
The Stabinger Viscometer

SVM 3000
 Designed for the petroleum industry
 Invented and developed by Dr. Hans Stabinger and his
team at the „Labor fuer Messtechnik“, Graz/Austria
 Protected by the European patent
EP 0 926 481 A2
 Conforming to ASTM D7042 standard test method

3
How does it work?

 Two measuring cells in one block:

Stabinger viscosity cell and U-tube density cell for
calculating the kinematic from the dynamic viscosity.

 Thermoelectric heating and cooling

Four cascaded Peltier elements plus sophisticated
electronics allow for a wide temperature range and
exceptional heating and cooling performance.

 Precise temperature control

The platinum temperature probe, the solid copper block
and the foam insulation make the SVM 3000 the best
thermostatted viscometer in the world.

4
Measured values

 Kinematic viscosity [mm2/s]

Fulfils ASTM D445 precision
 Dynamic viscosity [mPa·s]
Shows shear rate, shear stress
 Density [g/cm3]
4 digits resolution, 3½ digits accuracy
 Viscosity index [VI]
According to ASTM D2270, ISO 2909
 Temperature [°C, °F]
Exceeds ASTM D445 precision

5
Sample throughput

 at a constant temperature
with sample displacement up to 20 per hour1
including rinsing and drying up to 15 per hour2

 viscosity index
including rinsing and drying 3 per hour3

 temperature scan
0 to 100°C, 10° step, 11 points 1 per hour2

1) Measuring precision set to „fast 00“

2) „fast 00“, drying time 60 s

3) „precise 00“, drying time 200 s, every 2nd sample tested starting at

100°C.

says more than

a thousand words:
Hall effect sensor rotor tube
(measured speed) (constant speed)

11
The Stabinger principle

 A sample-filled tube rotates at a constant speed in a copper

housing.
 A lightweight rotor with a magnet inside floats in the sample free of
friction. It is centered by the centrifugal forces due to its low density.
 The shear forces of the sample are driving the rotor. The eddy
current forces induced by the magnet in the copper housing are
retarding the rotor.
 An equilibrium speed is established that is an unambiguous
measure for the dynamic viscosity.
 Measuring this speed using a Hall effect sensor makes it possible to
calculate the dynamic viscosity.
 The integrated U-tube density cell makes it possible to calculate
also the calculation of the kinematic viscosity by dividing the
dynamic viscosity through the density.

ASTM Standard D7042 *

„Standard test method for Dynamic Viscosity

and Density of Liquids by Stabinger Viscometer
(and the Calculation of Kinematic Viscosity)“

Round robin results for base oils at 40°C**:

ASTM standard D445 D7042
Method Glas capillary Stabinger
Repeatability 0.11% 0.09%
Reproducibility 0.65% 0.58%
Relative Bias 0.0%

* ASTM D7042 can be purchased at ASTM International, www.astm.org

** Published in Research Report RR D02-1555, service@astm.org
13
Procedure according to ASTM D7042

Fill sample

 For liquid petroleum products 1st determination

and crude oils
 Measurement procedures: Fill a further 1ml

rinsing & drying or

sample displacement Repeat determination

 Minimum 3ml sample volume

 Typical duration 10 minutes Deviation of two no
determinations
incl. rinsing and drying within limit?

 SVM 3000 in „precise“ - mode

yes

Valid result

14
The new Calibration Correction

 All calibration checks are based on two independent

determinations which fulfill the repeatability limit.
 A deviation to the certified value can be corrected based
on the existing calibration data – no additional
measurement or reference standard is necessary.
 A single point calibration including correction takes less
than 15 minutes.
 The calibration correction can be performed at any
temperature and any range using any certified reference
standard.
 Up to 5 calibrations points per temperature can be stored
at up to 5 different temperatures.
