A footnote is commonly, but not always, a

shortened version of a citation at the end

of the book. Whatever content your
footnote will include, however, it's
probably the last thing to do in the writing
of a text. Write your complete paper,
including a list of references, before
inserting footnotes.
Footnotes are notes placed at the bottom
of a page. They cite references or
comment on a designated part of the text
above it. For example, say you want to
add an interesting comment to a sentence
you have written, but the comment is not
directly related to the argument of your
paragraph. In this case, you could add the
symbol for a footnote. Then, at the
bottom of the page you could reprint the
symbol and insert your comment.
Footnotes are useful, as providing helpful
supplementary information and citations at
the bottom of a page of text. Typically,
editors will suggest that parenthetical
information be put into footnotes as a way
of keeping the flow of the prose intact.
Used judiciously, the footnote can be a
helpful addition to a text or a quick way to
cite a quotation.
Go to the end of the sentence you want to footnote. In
Microsoft Word, you would go to the References tab, click on
the Footnotes group and select "Insert Footnote." A number
"1" should appear to the right of the sentence, and a number
"1" will appear in the footer of your first page. In the footer,
type the information you'd like to include foot-noted.The cursor
should be placed after any punctuation. The number linking to
the footnote should appear outside the sentence, not inside of
it.
If you do not know where to find the menu to insert footnotes
in your word processing program, go to the help menu and
research it before starting to footnote your paper.
Whenever possible, put the footnote at the end of a
sentence, immediately following the period or
whatever punctuation mark completes that sentence.
Skip two spaces after the footnote before you begin
the next sentence. If you must include the footnote in
the middle of a sentence for the sake of clarity, or
because the sentence has more than one footnote
(try to avoid this!), try to put it at the end of the most
relevant phrase, after a comma or other punctuation
mark. Otherwise, put it right at the end of the most
relevant word. If the footnote is not at the end of a
sentence, skip only one space after it.
footnotes appear at the
bottom of the relevant
page, while endnotes all
appear at the end of your
document.
Use footnotes or endnotes to identify the
sources of this information. If you are using
footnotes, the note will appear on the same
page as the information you are
documenting, at the bottom (or "foot") of
the page. If you are using endnotes, the note
will appear together with all other notes on a
separate page at the end of your report, just
before the bibliography. If you are using
parenthetical documentatio
Footnote:There are two types of footnotes
commonly used in writing. A content footnote is
used to provide additional information or
reference that simplifies or supplements
information in the text.
A copyright permission footnote is used to give
credit to the source for long quotations, tables
or graphs, and other lengthy information within
a text. Both types of footnotes will appear at the
bottom of the printed page and the text that has
a footnote will have a small letter or number
following it. This same number or letter will
appear at the bottom of the page beside the
footnote.
MLA: MLA recommends limited use of
footnotes and if they are needed, to use
endnotes in place of footnotes. The reason
for this is because footnotes can often take
up too much space at the bottom of the
page whereas the endnotes don't take up
any room because they are on a separate
page at the end of the piece of writing.
