HISTORY

 Tehri dam is one of the tallest

dams in India and also in the
world.

 It is a multipurpose rock and

earth fill embankment dam on
the Bhagirathi river near Tehri
in Uttarakhand,India.

 The dam construction began in the

year 1978.It started working from
2006.
TECHNICAL DETAILS:

 Type of dam : Earth and Rock fill dam

 River : Bhagirathi
 Height : 260.5m
 Length : 575m
 Construction began : 1978
 Opened : 2006
 Surface area : 52 sq.m
 Costruction cost : 1Billion USD
 Gross storage : 3540 million cumec
 Live storage : 2615 millio cumec
 Zone seismic : zone-IV
 It is constructed for the generation of electricity, and the dam has a
capacity for generation of 1000 megawatts of hydroelectricity.

 Flood moderation during monsoon by storing exess water.

 It provides irrigation to an area of 270,000 hectares and
irrigation stabilization to an area of 600,000 hectares.

 To supply drinking water. It supplies 270 million imperial

gallons of drinking water per day to industrial areas of
Delhi,Uttar Pradesh and uttarakand.
TEHRI HYDRO POWER COMPLEX

1. Tehri dam hydro power plant(1000MW).

2. Koteshwar hydro electric project(400MW):

 It is 97m high.
 It is 14 miles downstream of tehri.
 under construction and completely or partially
submerge 16 villages.

3. Tehri pumped storage plant(PSP)1000MW.

 Likely to impact on biodiversity i.e,flora and fauna of the
area.
 Obstruction of movements of migrating fishes.

 Rivers carry lot of sediment which will be locked up by the

construction of dam and eats away storage capacity.
 Water accumulation on u/s causes inundation of land.

 There is a problem of water-logging and salinity of the land in

the command area.
SAFETY MEASURES TAKEN:

 Afforestation in an area of 4586.07hactares.

 Development of fish farms
 Green belt along the rim of the reservoir.
DUE TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF DAM
 23 villages were fully submerged and 73 villages were partly
submerged along with tehri.

 14349 families were effected.

 2.582 th.ha of forest land,1.6 th.ha of cuturable land,2.883

th.ha of other lands were effected.

 The total land effected due to the construction of dam was

7.065 th.ha.
 Sundarlal Bahuguna,Veerendhra
datt saklani and local people
opposed the construction
because it rests in an area prone
to earthquake.
 The possible earthquake could
crack the dam,which results in
disaster unknown in human
history.
 The downstream population in
the holy cities of
Devaprayaga,Rishikesh and
Haridwar would be wiped
off,thousands of people would
be killed.
 Tehri dam is situated in highly active central himalayan
seismic zone,a major geological fault zone.

 It is designed to withstand earthquake of upto 7.2 on the

Ritcher scale but experts predict that earthquake of magnitude
8.5 or more could strike this region.

 A major landslide could cause a huge wave which could

overtop the dam and many places like Haridwar,Meerut etc.,
CONCLUSION

 Tehri is “an enormous squandering of public money”.

 It is the 5th tallest dam in the world.

 It is described as “one of the most dangerous dams in the

world”.

AWARDS:

 International milestone project award in 2009.

 Power line award in 2012.
 India’s best project award in 2011.
QUESTIONS

1. What is the type of the dam and on which river it is

constructed?
2. Which rank did the tehri dam acquire in world wide?
3. what is the reason behind the protest against tehri dam?
4. State the tehri hydro power complex.
