INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS PUMP ?
The hydraulic machines which convert the mechanical energy into hydraulic
energy are called pumps.
There are various types of pumps used in power stations for different purposes
like to feed the drum of boiler, boost the boiler feed pump etc.
Various types and sizes of pump are used in power station for handling cold
water, hot water, oil, chemicals etc.
• Series pumping
• Parallel Pumping
• Introduction
BOILER FEED PUMP
• There are three pump sets for each boiler. Two pump sets are supplying feed
water to each boiler, with one pump set being on stand-by.
• Each pump set consists of a booster pump, directly driven from one end of
shaft of an electric driving motor, and a boiler feed pump driven from the
opposite end of the motor shaft through a variable speed turbo-coupling
being enclosed in a split fabricated guard.
• Mechanical seal
• Journal and thrust bearings
• Bearing housings
• Hydraulic balance

Balancing of Axial Thrust
• Drive Motor
The lube oil pump can be so designed that the lubricating oil requirements of
the driving and driven machines can also be supplied. For the start-up, all the
bearings are pre-lubricated by an attached Auxiliary Oil Pump, which is driven
by separate motor. The A.O.P. supplies oil to the feed pump and motor when
the pump is hot and stand-by.

cavitation
• Pump cavitation occurs when pressure at pump suction drops below
the atmospheric pressure of the liquid.
• Cavitation is often characterized by:
• Loud noise
• Loss of capacity
• Pitting damage to the part
• RECIRCULATION CONTROL
