INDUSTRIAL WORKERS’
COMMINTMENT IN
BANGLADESH: A SEARCH
FOR CORRELATES
We live in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a developing country

Focus on development of the Industrial

Sector
What does an industry need?

• The outputs of the factors of production.

Workers + Hard work and diligence

=
Industrial development
Commitment
• Commitment is the composite of values, it involves
both performance and acceptance of behavior
appropriate to an industrial way of life
• Acceptance of values of industrial society and their
expression in behavior: Not only loyalty to the
workplace but loyalty to the rules of the workplace
Popular belief:
Workers in Bangladesh and other developing countries have no or
very low commitment to their work

They don’t have the attributes necessary to a committed

industrial labor force

RESULT:
Hampered industrial growth
Absenteeism
High labor turnover
Shortage of labor

Commitment of Workers in Bangladesh:
Considering the major findings of the above mentioned
studies, we can easily conclude :
• During the early periods of industrialization, industrial
workers in Bangladesh were mostly uncommitted to
industry.
• After the liberation of Bangladesh, the commitment scene
seems to have changed some extent.
• With the rapid growth of industries in different areas of the
country, more & more people took to factory employment.
• We still find several symptoms of lack of commitment among the
present Bangladeshi industrial workers.
• Workers generally come to work in factory leaving their family
back in the village & this prompts them to frequent visits to their
villages to meet their family members & to fulfill their family
obligations. This means that high rate of absenteeism prevails in
industries in Bangladesh.
• Absenteeism is a serious factor affecting productivity.
• Our workers are pushed into industrial area because of
poverty & lack of employment in non-agricultural
season. They do not have high ambition. They go back
home as soon as they accumulated some money.
• If we view high rate of absenteeism as any indication of
lack of commitment, we easily that workers in
Bangladesh lack commitment to industry.
Index of commitment
Commitment comprises two values
1. Value of performance
2. Value of discipline

P.B. Chakma in his study developed a six- item index to identify the
commitment level of workers and identify the socio personal factors
affecting communication
Questions were used to construct the index of commitment:
Questions Responses showing score
( 0) ( 1)
1. With the same net income which of the following occupations Other than Factory
would you prefer? Factory work, farming, office work, petty business. factory work Work

2. Have you ever thought of leaving your factory job? Yes No

3.If you lose your job tomorrow what occupation would you take Other than Factory work
again? factory work

4. Are you satisfied for being a factory worker? No Yes

5. What is your view about factory worker’s status in your Low/Same High/Better
community?

6. What is your view about factory discipline (rules)? Disagreeable Agreeable

their scores:

Low 0,1 and 2

Medium 3 and 4

High 5and 6
Result and Discussion
The index of commitment shows the result that:

Highly committed workers 42%

Moderately committed workers 36%
Lowly committed workers 22%

It also shows that a bulk number of workers are highly or moderately

committed. They are employed not for prior preference but to earn a living. By
recruiting informal procedure, they develop commitment after employment. But
in developing countries it is invalid.
The commitment level can be measure according to other perspectives.
Association between age and commitment
Below 25 years 28%

25 to 45 years 61%

Above 45 years 11%

Median of age 29.5

Above the median age: more than 50% highly committed

Below the median age : 29% highly committed
Education and commitment:
Workers with little or no education 50% highly committed
Workers of highly education 30% highly committed

Marital status and commitment:

Analysis shows that there is no significant relation.

Dependency load and commitment:

Average dependent is four. The analysis shows dependency load has nothing to do with commitment.
Rural-Urban background and commitment:
About 82% workers are with origin of rural background. But urban origin or
background are more committed than rural origin.
Nature of employment and commitment:
Permanent workers are more committed than temporary workers.
Length of industrial experience and commitment:
Workers with longer period of industrial work experience are found to be
more committed than their counterparts with short period of experience.
Occupational background and commitment:
Prior industrial work experience 33%
Experience of agricultural work of allied 29%
No previous work experience 18%
Industrial occupational background 70%highly committed
Non- Industrial background 27% highly committed

Family attachment and commitment:

Living away from family 53%
Living with family 58% highly committed
Living away from family 28% highly committed.
Association Between
Age and Commitment

Age reflects the level of commitment of a worker. Meyer and

Allen defined age as a factor of affective commitment in his
three component model of commitment. P.B. Chakma found
in his study that commitment increases with the increase in
the age of workers.

Why old workers are highly committed?

active active
Occupational background and
commitment.
 Inthis study it is found that 33% of the
workers had prior industrial work
experience.
 Only29% had experience of agricultural
work or allied occupation.
 Around18% had no previous working
experience.
 Theanalysis of the occupational
background and commitment shows that
with a occupational background shows
higher commitment that of without
occupational background
Conclusion
 It
is found that with an occupational
background, age, and experience a
worker is much more committed to the
company. And a new worker just
completing graduation is also much
committed to the company.
