ABSTRACT

 This project proposes a DVR (dynamic voltage restorer) is a custom power

device to mitigate the power quality problems such as voltage sag and swell..
 The proposed algorithm is applied to some disturbances in load voltage caused
by induction motors starting, and a three-phase short circuit fault. Also, the
capability of the proposed DVR has been tested to limit the downstream fault
current.
 The current limitation will restore the point of common coupling (pcC) (the bus
to which all feeders under study are connected) voltage and protect the DVR
itself.
PROBLEM IDENTIFIED

 Power quality problems

 Voltage sag
 Voltage swell
SOLUTION TO THE PROBELM

 There are many different methods to mitigate voltage sags and swells, but the
use of a custom power device is considered to be the most efficient method,
 e.g. FACTS for transmission systems which improve the power transfer
capabilities and stability margins.
 The term custom power pertains to the use of power electronics controller in a
distribution system especially, to deal with various power quality problems.
 Custom power assures customers to get pre-specified quality and reliability of
supply.
 There are different types of Custom Power devices used in electrical network to improve power
quality problems. Each of the devices has its own benefits and limitations.

 A few of these reasons are as follows. The SVC pre-dates the DVR, but the DVR is still
preferred because the SVC has no ability to control active power flow .

 Another reason include that the DVR has a higher energy capacity compared to the SMES and
UPS devices.

 Furthermore, the DVR is smaller in size and cost is less compared to the DSTATCOM and other
custom power devices.

 Based on these reasons, it is no surprise that the DVR is widely considered as an effective
custom power device in mitigating voltage sags.

DVR CONSISTS 4 PARTS

 VOLTAGE SOURCE INVERTER

 INJECTION TRANSFORMERS

 PASSIVE FILTERS

 ENERGY STORAGE
The control and protection of a DVR designed to compensate voltage
sags must consider the following functional requirements.

 When the supply voltage is normal, the DVR operates in a standby mode
with zero voltage injection.

 When a voltage sag/swell occurs, the DVR needs to inject three single
phase voltages in synchronism with the supply in a very short time.

 If there is a fault on the downstream of the DVR, the converter is by-

passed temporarily using thyristor switches to protect the DVR against
over currents.
PULSE WIDTH MODULATION
ADVANTAGES

 Reduce the losses and improve power quality at the load bus.

 low flicker at the load voltage.

 low harmonic distortion in load voltage.

 acceptance of fluctuations, and poor factor loads without significant

effect on the terminal voltage.
APPLICATIONS

A. DVR has shown the efficiency and effectiveness on

voltage sag compensation hence it makes DVR to be an interesting
power quality improvement Device.

B. power conditioning equipments using static power

electronic converters to improve the power quality of distribution
system customers
