The document discusses various methods for waterproofing concrete structures to prevent water penetration. It describes how water can penetrate through concrete via capillary action or hydrostatic pressure through pores, voids, cracks, and joints. Quality waterproofing creates an impermeable barrier that prevents water passage even under pressure while including drainage. Common waterproofing methods mentioned include cementitious waterproofing using a rigid or semi-flexible coating, liquid waterproofing membranes, bituminous membranes and coatings, polyurethane liquid membranes, and bentonite clay waterproofing. Each method is suitable for different applications and surfaces like roofs, basements, pools, and other wet areas.

Waterproofing is the treatment of a surface to prevent the passage of liquid
water in the presence of hydrostatic pressure. How water can penetrate concrete structure A. Penetration through Concrete 1. Capillary action- sucks water into pores 2. Hydrostatic pressure- forces water into pores
B. Penetration through Openings
1. Large Voids 2. Cracks 3. Joints What is Quality Waterproofing? A waterproofing system which prevents the passage of liquid water in the presence of hydrostatic pressure. Protection as necessary A drainage system that reduces hydrostatic pressure. Accessory products which complement, attach and detail the waterproofing and drainage Why Waterproof a Structure? Where it is Used? Basement of Structure Walls Bathrooms Kitchens Balconies Decks Terrace or Roofs Green roofs Water tanks Swimming pools Waterproofing Methods o Cementitious Waterproofing oLiquid Waterproofing Membrane oBituminous Membrane oBituminous Coating oPolyurethane Liquid Membrane oBentonite Waterproofing Cementitious Waterproofing Method The easiest method of waterproofing in construction. This method is often used in the internal wet areas such as toilets. This method is usually a rigid or semi-flexible type waterproofing, but since it is used in internal areas, it is not exposed to sunlight and weathering. Thus cementitious waterproofing does not go through contract and expansion process. Application of Cementitous Waterproofing 1. Water Treatment Plants 2. Sewage Treatment Plants 3. Bridges 4. Dams 5. Railways & Subway Systems 6. Marine Cargo Ports & Docks 7. Parking Structure & Lots 8. Tunnels Liquid Waterproofing Membrane Method
Liquid membrane is a thin coating which consists of usually a primer
coat and two coats of top coats which are applied by spray, roller, or trowel. It offers more flexibility than the cementitious types of waterproofing. Liquid waterproofing membrane can be spray-applied liquid membrane composed of polymer-modified asphalt, Bituminous Coating Waterproofing Method
Bituminous coating or asphalt coating is a type of coating used for
waterproofing and flexible protective coat in accordance with its formulation and polymerization grade. The most common applications of bituminous coating include areas that are beneath screed. It is an excellent waterproofing agent, especially on surfaces such as concrete foundations. Its made in bitumen and its not suitable for expose to sunlight. Bituminous Membrane Waterproofing Method Bituminous membrane waterproofing is popular method used for low-sloped roofs due to their proven performance. It has torch on membrane and self-adhesive membrane.
Self-adhesive membrane type has low shelf life as bonding
properties of membrane reduces with time.
Torch on membranes have exposed and covered types.
Polyurethane Liquid Membrane Waterproofing Method
This method in waterproofing is used for flat roof area and
exposed to weathering. This waterproofing method is expensive because it can offer a higher flexibility. Polyurethane is very sensitive to moisture content present, therefore before application, one has to be very careful evaluating the moisture content of the concrete slab, otherwise peeling or de-bonding of membranes may happen after some time. Bentonite Waterproofing Method
When installed below grade as a waterproofing membrane, it
becomes hydrated with the moisture that is naturally present in the soil and forms an impermeable barrier that absorbs and expels water. It can expand and contract and is capable of absorbing seven to 10 times its own weight in water, swelling up to 18 times its dry volume. THANK YOU!
