PHOTO CHROMIC FINISH
• Photo chromic means ability to change color
when exposed sunlight.
• A type of dye can change color all by itself
once they are exposed to sunlight. Photo
chromic dyes changes the color of clothes,
giving them a dramatic effect.
• When clothes are exposed under sunlight and
absorb the ultra violet radiation, they change
colors.
• When the radiation is removed, the dyes
resume their original shade.
• The speed at which the dyes fade back to
become colorless depends on the ambient
temperature, and chemical structure of the
dye.
PROCESSING OF PHOTOCHROMIC
FINISH
• Color changes can be initiated from ultraviolet rays of sunlight.

• Physiochemical and chemical processes such as coacervation and

interfacial polymerization have been used to microencapsulate photo
chromic systems.

• To obtain satisfactory shelf life and durability on textiles, interfacial

polymerization techniques are nearly always adopted.

• It is the same technique used to produce textile fibers and films such as
polyester, nylon and polyurethane.

• The photo chromic dye is introduced to textile with the help of process of
microencapsulation.
MICROENCAPSULATION
• It is a process by which very tiny droplets or particles of liquid or solid
material are surrounded or coated with a continuous film of polymeric
material.

UV light

• The encapsulated dyes can be applied to fabrics through conventional

printing, dyeing, spraying methods.
APPLICATION ON FABRIC
Apply Dye to the Keep the fabric in

AFTER APLLICATION ON FABRIC
• The polymer of the dye gets heated up above a phase transition
temperature.

• After observing the energy of sunlight or ultra violet rays, the molecular
structure is changed, causing its absorbed wavelength to be changed
allowing the color to spread.

• When it is cooled, the change is frozen in a glass state.

• It reverts back to is original molecule structure and shade when the light is
blocked.

• The material possesses high contrast storage, high sensitivity , good

stability and resolution.

AND UN-EXPOSED TO UV LIGHT
OPPORTUNITIES AND FLEXIBILITIES

• Photo chromic textiles provides the garment designer a number of

designing opportunities and flexibilities like:

1. Fabric Dyeing and then garment designing

2. Fabric overall printing and then garment designing.
3. Garment designing and then screen printing.
4. Using the photo chromic fabrics as main body, trims, patches, linings etc.
APPLICATIONS
• Photo chromic dyes finishes can be used on garments to print brand name or
logo to prevent its duplication.

• These finishes can be used in making fashionable materials like footwear,

furnishings etc.

• They can be used for security devices that can be observed

spectroscopically or by specialized instruments.

• Can be used as a UV-Indicators in a particular region.

• It can be used in packaging industries.

• Apparel induced with photo chromic finishes can be used for:

1. Sportswear
2. Outdoor work wear
3. Children wear

CONSTRAINS
• Photo chromic dyes are still not commercially successful in the market despite
all the amazing effects.

• These dyes are not water soluble making its application impossible on woolen
and cotton fabrics. These dyes only dissolve in solvents which are compatible
with synthetic fabric.

• Also these dyes do not have the capacity to withstand heat, thus losses its
properties when dyeing fabric is carried out at high temperature.

• Some dyes are not doing color change behind automotive windows as the
glass absorbs UV light required for the color changes.

• It is costlier then general dyes.

• It may not endure majority of laundry.
