PHOTO CHROMIC FINISH
• Photo chromic means ability to change color
when exposed sunlight.
• A type of dye can change color all by itself
once they are exposed to sunlight. Photo
chromic dyes changes the color of clothes,
giving them a dramatic effect.
• When clothes are exposed under sunlight and
absorb the ultra violet radiation, they change
colors.
• When the radiation is removed, the dyes
resume their original shade.
• The speed at which the dyes fade back to
become colorless depends on the ambient
temperature, and chemical structure of the
dye.
PROCESSING OF PHOTOCHROMIC
FINISH
• Color changes can be initiated from ultraviolet rays of sunlight.
• It is the same technique used to produce textile fibers and films such as
polyester, nylon and polyurethane.
• The photo chromic dye is introduced to textile with the help of process of
microencapsulation.
MICROENCAPSULATION
• It is a process by which very tiny droplets or particles of liquid or solid
material are surrounded or coated with a continuous film of polymeric
material.
• After observing the energy of sunlight or ultra violet rays, the molecular
structure is changed, causing its absorbed wavelength to be changed
allowing the color to spread.
• It reverts back to is original molecule structure and shade when the light is
blocked.
• These dyes are not water soluble making its application impossible on woolen
and cotton fabrics. These dyes only dissolve in solvents which are compatible
with synthetic fabric.
• Also these dyes do not have the capacity to withstand heat, thus losses its
properties when dyeing fabric is carried out at high temperature.
• Some dyes are not doing color change behind automotive windows as the
glass absorbs UV light required for the color changes.
