SEISMIC BEHAVIOUR
OF SHEAR WALL
INTRODUCTION
• Shear wall is a structural system which provide large strength and
stiffness to building in the direction of orientation and resist against
both lateral load .(structure ductility inecrese: reinforcement more)
• The most common loads for which shear walls are designed to carry
are wind and seismic load.
• Shear wall thickness varry from 40mm-500mm depending upon no. of
stories, building age and thermal insulation requirements.
• Materials uesd in construction of shear walls are wood, masonry,
steel, cold formed steel (cfs).
History
• In early 1950's , plywood were used for the construction of shear walls
but it could not be used for the construction of building with more
then three floors.
• In early 1970's Steel plate shear walls were first used in California,
North America for seismic retrofit of hospital.
• Masonry systems are among the most common forms used in urban
areas for low and mid rise buildings. It possess low level of ductility
and are particularly vulnerable under seismic events.
• In recent years new innovative systems such as cold-formed steel
(CFS) structures have emerged which offer some advantages over
conventional structural system counterparts, such as high strength-
toweight ratio, controlled material quality and sustainability.
Steel Plate Shear Wall
• Steel plate shear wall can be used for the construction of structural
wall having thickness about 18”(including furring).
• The use of a SPSWsystem reduces construction time.
• According to study, using SPSW was approximately 18% less than that
of the building designed using a concrete shear wall core system,
which results in a reduction of foundation loads due to gravity and
overall building seismic loads.
• SPSW systems are usually more flexible in comparison to concrete
shear walls, primarily due to their flexual flexibility.
• In both The Century and the U.S.Federal Courthouse projects, large
composite concrete infill steel pipecolumns were used at all corners of
the core wall to improve the system’s flexural stiffness as well as its
overturning capacity.
• In the U.S. Federal Courthouse project, the welding of the plate splice
connections was delayed until most of the dead load deformation
occurred in order to relieve the pre-compression within the steel plate
shear wall panel .
• SPSW core systems are best suited for medium to high rise buildings.
This configuration provides better torsional and overturning stiffness
and capacity.
Masonry Shear Wall
• The overall behaviour of the masonry shear wall is controlled by the
mechanical properties of the brick/block and the joints, as well as the relative
positions and orientation of the joint sets.
• As such the presence of joint creates planes of weakness along which failures
may initiate and propagate. The overall behaviour of the masonry composite
is determined by the properties of the materials and the strength &
orientation of the block and mortar interfaces.
• The primary function of masonry elements is to sustain a vertical gravity load.
However, structural masonry elements are required to withstand combined
shear, flexure and compressive stresses under earthquake or wind load
combinations consisting of lateral as well as vertical loads.
CFS Shear wall
• Cold-formed steel (CFS) framing has been successfully used in a variety of
construction applications for many years.
• The overall goal of most design is to minimize labour and material resources
to reduce cost and time. CFS systems are very efficient at minimizing
materials.
• CFS shear wall design is specially that many structural engineers have
limited exposure in practice because the behavior of the thin sheets that
were used to form the members was different from classic hot-rolled steel
shapes, the thin sheets would deform and locally buckle under load.
• In CFS structures, SWP is the primary lateral load resisting system and the
materials used in sheathing are wood and steel.
• CFS Steel Plate Sheathing Shear wall has similar behavior as of steelplate
shear wall.
