DAM & ITS TYPES
NEEDS FOR DAM CONSTRUCTION
CLASSIFICATION OF DAM
MAJOR DAMS IN PAKISTAN
FACTOR AFFECTING DAM AXIS
DIFFERENT CAUSES OF DAM FAILURE
Definition
A dam is a structure which prevents the
flow of water and accumulates it in a
reservoir
Needs for Dam Construction
1. Drinking and domestic water supply
2. Flood control
3. Irrigation
4. Industrial water supply
5. Hydroelectric energy production
6. Retention and control of sediments
DAMS AND ITS
TYPE
ACCORDING to the SIZE of the DAM
Large (Big) dam
Small dam
Medium Dam
If
the height of the dam is between 50m and
100m
Gravity Dams
Arch Dams
Butress Dams
Embankment Dams
Composite Dams
Rubber Dam
CLASSIFICATION
OF DAMS
GRAVITY DAMS
Gravity Dams use their triangular shape and the sheer
weight of their rock and concrete structure to hold back
the water in the reservoir.
ARCH DAMS
Arch Dams utilize the strength of an arch to displace the
load of water behind it onto the rock walls that it is built
into.
BUTRESS DAMS
Buttress Dams use multiple reinforced columns to
support a dam that has a relatively thin structure.
Because of this, these dams often use half as much
concrete as gravity dams
EMBANKMENT DAMS
Tarbela Dam
Magla Dam
Khanpur Dam
Bunji Dam
Tarbela Dam
Itis one of the largest dams in Pakistan. It
was built on Indus or Sindh River. Its is near
from Atock, Rawalpindi, Abbotabad. It was
built in 1976. Its water is used for power
generation and irrigations system. It is 143
meter high and 2750 meter in width.
Terbela Dam is one of the main sources for
electric capacity.
Magla Dam
It is located near Jehlam and 99 km
from Islamabad. Mangla is built on river
Jehlam. With financial aidfrom word bank
it was built in 1967. It is 138 meter high and
3140 meter wide.
Khanpur Dam
Khanpur Dam is located in KPK province
but very neat to Islamabad. It is mainly
used as water reservoir and is used for
supply of drinking water to Islamabad and
Rawalpindi. Its water is also used for
agriculture purposes in nearby areas. It
was built in era of Field Marshal
Muhammad Auyb Khan.
Bunji Dam
Bunji Dam is a upcoming project and its
site is located in Gilgit Baltistan. This hydro
project is built on Indus River. It is not a
very large project as Mangla or Tarbela
but definitely ad some value in system of
Hydro Power for Pakistan.
FACTORS
AFFECTING DAM
AXIS
FACTORS AFFECTING to the
PLACE of the DAM AXIS
• Topography
• Geology
• Materials
• Spillway location availability
• Derivation
• Sediments in the flowing water
• Water quality
• Expropriation costs
• Earthquake possibility
• Downstream water rights
Dam Failure
construction materials/techniques
Spillway design error
Geological instability
Sliding of a mountain
Poor maintenance
Extreme inflow
Human, computer or design error
