Introduction

• Gears are the most common means used for power transmission
• They can be applied between two shafts which are
• Parallel
• Collinear
• Perpendicular and intersecting
• Perpendicular and nonintersecting
• Inclined at any arbitrary angle
Department of Mechanical Engineering

History of Gear
• We also know that earlier more than 12,000 years old people were
living in case and the doors of the caves were made of granite.
• How were these heavy doors open and closed ? They were opened and
closed by none other than a system with gear mechanism and wheel .
• They have used primitive gear made of woods .
• Greek and roman literatures show extensive usage of gears for forward
motions.
• In 18th century industrial revolution in England led to usage of cycloidal
gear for clock, irrigation devices, water mills and powered machines.
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Gear
• A gear is a wheel with teeth on its outer edge.
• The teeth of one gear mesh (or engage) with the teeth of
another

Gear Tooth Terminology

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Gear Parameters
• Number of teeth
• Form of teeth
• Size of teeth
• Face Width of teeth
• Style and dimensions of gear blank
• Design of the hub of the gear
• Degree of precision required
• Means of attaching the gear to the shaft
• Means of locating the gear axially on the shaft
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Types of Gears
Spur Gear
• Are used in transmitting torque between parallel shafts
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Helical Gear

• Are used in transmitting torques between parallel or non parallel

shafts, they are not as noisy as spur gears
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Rack & Pinion

• A rack is a gear whose pitch diameter is infinite, resulting in a
straight line pitch circle.
• Involute of a very large base circle approaches a straight line
• Used to convert rotary motion to straight line motion
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Bevel Gear
• Bevel gears are used to transfer drive through an angle of 90o.
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Worm gear and wheel

• The worm gear is always the drive gear
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Reason of gear failure

• Abrasive wear
• Corrosive Wear
• Initial pitting
• Destructive pitting
• Scoring
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Objectives
• Understand basic principles of gearing.
• Understand gear trains and how to calculate ratios.
• Recognize different gearing systems and relative advantages and
disadvantages between them.
• Understand geometry of different gears and their dimensional
properties.
• Recognize different principles of gearing.
• Recognize the unorthodox ways gears can be used in different motion
systems.
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Advantages
• By using gear large velocity ratio can be obtained with
minimum space.
• Gear are mechanically strong, so higher load can be lift.
• They are used for transmitting motion over small centre
distance of shaft.
• They are used for large reduction in speed and for
transmission of torque
• Gear required only lubrication, hence less maintenance is
required.
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Disadvantages
• They are not suitable for transmitting motion over a large
distance.
• Permanently damaged in case of excessive loading.
• They have no flexibility.
• Gear operation is noisy.
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Application
• Agro industry
• In automobiles
• For marine applications
• Instrumentation
• Power station
• Wind Turbine
• Mill heads
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Applications

A conveyor drive involving heavy-shock torsional loading is operated by

an electric motor.
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Summary
• To understand the gears one should be familiar with the gear
terminology.
• Spur gears are most commonly used for transmission of power.
• Speed of mating gears is inversely proportional to the number of
teeth.
• Mating gears should have the same diametral pitch.
• A number of gear manufacturing methods are available.
• Good gear design should take care of the power, speed, life and
material properties.
