ABOUT NETWORK
NETIQUETTE?
THE NETWORK NETIQUETTE
The 10 Commandments of Netiquette
(Network Etiquette)
• I. Thou shalt NOT send
advertisements via email. The
network is not to be used for
commercial gain, product
advertisement, political lobbying, or
religious teachings. You may,
however, advertise for district-related
fund-raisers and activities.
The 10 Commandments of Netiquette
(Network Etiquette)
• II. Thou shalt NOT use all caps in
email. Using all caps in an email
is interpreted as if you were
shouting your message. As with
talking, what you say is
sometimes less important than
how you say it.
The 10 Commandments of Netiquette
(Network Etiquette)
• III. Thou shalt NOT send spam or
jokes via email. Sending chain-
letter emails and forwarding jokes
and other spam is not only a
waste of network resources, but is
a waste of people’s time.
The 10 Commandments of Netiquette
(Network Etiquette)
• IV. Thou shalt NOT open email
attachments that you are not expecting.
People are often infected by computer
viruses via email. If you receive email that
seems suspicious, do not open them.
Especially avoid opening attachments that
you are not expecting, even if you know
the sender.
The 10 Commandments of Netiquette
(Network Etiquette)
• V. Thou shalt use caution when
sending large attachments. Avoid
sending large files (such as
several pictures) via email. Doing
so, wastes system resources and
can cause technical problems.
The 10 Commandments of Netiquette
(Network Etiquette)

•VI. Thou shalt keep a clean

mailbox and home directory.
Delete unwanted sent and
received mail on a regular
basis. Also delete unwanted
files from your home directory.
The 10 Commandments of Netiquette
(Network Etiquette)
• VII. Thou shalt count to 10 before
hitting send. If for some reason you
need to let off some steam, do not
reach for that GroupWise icon.
Sending an emotionally-charged
email only takes seconds, but can
cause irrevocable damage.
The 10 Commandments of Netiquette
(Network Etiquette)
• VIII. Thou shalt print only what is needed.
Save a tree and save the ink! While the
printers are there to be used, they are not
to be used for personal printing or as
copiers. Instead of printing lengthy
documents or web pages, consider copying
and pasting what you need printed or use
the “print selection” feature.
The 10 Commandments of Netiquette
(Network Etiquette)
• IX. Thou shalt obey copyright laws. Be sure to
site your source of original material. If, for
example, you use a professional artist’s song
during a PowerPoint presentation, you should
reference that artist’s name as well as the song’s
name somewhere in your presentation. Also, it is
unlawful to make copies of musical CD’s for your
personal use or distribution.
The 10 Commandments of Netiquette
(Network Etiquette)
• X. Thou shalt obey the DCSC Technology
Acceptable Use Policy The Acceptable Use
Policy should be obeyed at all times. For
example, you must have permission from
the technology department to install any
software on your computer. Refer to the
policy if you have any questions about
what is acceptable use with the computer
throughout the district.
