WORK means employment or paid work .

LIFE refers to ones personal lives , experiences

and responsibilities outside and beyond the
workplace .

• For many these include families and often

the debate of work life balance is referred
to as work family balance.

“Our lives are the mixture

of different roles.”
BALANCE
 A situation in which different elements are
equal or in the correct proportions
Definition
A more often used term in an organizational aspect is “Work-Lie
Balance . This formal terminology shows a priotized balance
between life and work more appropriately saying a balance between
personal and professional life.
FORMAL DEFINITION: formal definition of this would be
“ Work- life balance is a term used to
describe the balance between time
allocated for work and other aspects
of life.”
 Areas of life not limited to personal interest, family, and social or
leisure activities.
Example
 A person who is rising at 7’o clock going to office at 8’o
clock and work from 8am -9pm.
He has a family of two children and his wife. He works hard
for the persuit of happiness of his family partially for his own
desires as well at his office .Returning home at 9pm he gives
time to his family trying to travel in two boats at a time . But
in this hectic routine he has no time for himself. His boss is
demanding for more and more work efficiency and his
family also demands fir his time.
 REASON OF IMBALANCE :So we diagnose that
expectations and internal anxious self is burdening the
person .
Review of literature
Employee well being has often been examined using
measures of work –life conflict and work-life
balance.(Rumi & Ayush 2011).work –life balance
is about employees having control on their
activities which they perform at various times and
at various places. This balance is achieved when an
organization accepts it as a basic right of an
employee to have satisfied both in organization
and outside the organization.It benefits
individual, organixation ad society as a whole.
Work –life balance in organization
It is very essential for the organizations to have
good work –life balance practices and policies, this
would ensure various factors like:
 Decreased employee turnover rates.
 Enhanced employee morale and satisfaction.
 Enhanced employee loyalty and commitment
towards the organization.
 Less absenteeism due to employee
Work-life balance
Is a concept that supports the
efforts of employees to split their
time and energy between work
and the other important aspects
of their lives.
 Work-life balance is a daily effort
to make time for family, friends,
community participation,
spirituality, personal growth, self-
care, and other personal
activities, in addition to the
demands of the workplace.
number of years ago, Bryan Dyson, then the President and CEO of Coca-Cola
Enterprises, delivered a commencement speech at Georgia Tech. In it, he discussed
the difference between glass and rubber balls. His insight is as valuable today as it was
then.

 “Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling

some five balls in the air. You name them — work,
family, health, friends and spirit and you’re
keeping all of these in the air. You will soon
understand that work is a rubber ball. If you
drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four
balls — family, health, friends, and spirit — are
made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will
be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged,
or even shattered. They will never be the same.
You must understand that and strive for balance in
your life.”
You don’t have to make yourself miserable to
be successful.

 It’s
natural to look back and mythologize the
long nights and manic moments of genius, but
success isn’t about working hard, it’s about
working smart.”
 Balancing work and life is never easy,
especially these days when workers are
constantly in contact with each other via
mobile devices and laptop computers that can
make it so easy to bring work home at the end
of the day. But, it’s important to take care of
yourself (and your family) emotionally and
physically.
Dolly Parton
"Never get so busy making a living that you forget to
make a life."

Be intentional about your time

 Ifyou're going to successfully juggle a rich

and full professional life with an equally
satisfying personal life, you must learn to
ruthlessly manage your time.
THEORY
 To help you come up with other ideas to manage your time, use
the SCAMPER
 creative brainstorming tool. Here's how it works:
 S = Substitute. Is there a process or equipment that can you can
substitute for a current one that will speed up the way you do business?
C = Combine. What time-consuming activities can you combine to save
time?
A = Adapt. What are some ideas or processes from other businesses
that you can adapt to make you more efficient?
M = Modify. What can you safely minimize in your life?
P = Put to other use. Can you put some staff members to other use by
training them to be cross functional?
E = Eliminate. What can you eliminate altogether? This could include
processes, attitudes and people.
R = Rearrange. How can you rearrange your regular routine to make it
more family-friendly?
Increased responsibilities at
home OR at work
Personal Mindset
 A mindset, according to Dweck, is a
self-perception or “self-theory” that
people hold about themselves
 . Believing that you are either
“intelligent” or “unintelligent” is a
simple example of a mindset.
 People may also have a mindset
related their personal or professional
lives—“I’m a good teacher” or “I’m a
bad parent,”
 for example. People can be aware
or unaware of their mindsets,
according to Dweck, but they can
have profound effect on learning
achievement, personal relationships,
professional success, and many
other dimensions of life.
Social Media
 Employees who spend too much time spent
checking social media whilst on holiday could
return to work with added stress from
relationship troubles, a new survey has
revealed.
 ‘Addiction to technology is a growing problem
for couples, as people spend more time in
‘virtual relationships’ with friends, followers
and even complete strangers. Unfortunately,
we are seeing a rise in the number of people
who consider this problem to be a
contributing factor to their marriage
breakdown. Often, by the time they turn to
us, the problem has spiraled into an
irreconcilable state, and divorce has become
the only feasible option’.
Long Working Hours
 The impact of overtime and extended working
hours on the risk of occupational injuries and
illnesses among a nationally representative
sample of working adults.
Unpaid Time Flexibility
Off For Life

Dependent
Care

Solutions To Prevent
Imbalance
Allow Unpaid Time Off for Life
Events

 Some life events merit paid time off, but other

life cycle needs are a bit more complicated.
Be considerate about your employees’
emergency family needs and their desires to
better themselves.
 For example, you could offer unpaid leave for
events that don’t qualify under the Family and
Medical Leave Act, such as helping care for a
parent with a serious illness or extending maternity
leave for a couple more months after the birth of a
child. You may also wish to offer unpaid leave to
valuable employees who want to attend graduate
school or are exploring the option of moving to a
new place for a spouse’s job.
Allow Schedule Flexibility
 Not every business is well-suited for a virtual workforce,
so don’t compromise the productivity of your company
if you need your employees to arrive at work in-person.
 However, it is another thing entirely to give your
employees the option to work remotely when they really
need to because of an emergency that requires them to
make up time later.
 For example, if your employee’s child is sick, consider
offering her the opportunity to work from home that day
or come into the office over time weekend to make up
for lost time. This way your employee doesn’t have to
worry about missing work and wages from taking the
time off and your company’s deadlines can still be met
Dependent Care

 Many employees have concerns about childcare while they

are working. In addition, more employees are also having the
need to care for aging parents as well. Restful Sleep Hotel
found that a dependent care program was the most popular
request from their employees
 . This type of program is when a company provides a benefit
that gives employees caregiving services with pretax dollars,
onsite dependent care or time off to care for family members.
Employees can utilize services for children, the elderly or
disabled.
 John and Joan Smith are married, and both work for the
hotel. They have two children who require daycare and are
spending close to $1,000 a month. Restful Sleep Hotel
announced at the conference that they have decided to offer
onsite daycare in a newly-refurbished section of the
corporate office. The cost will be free to all employees.
• The Smiths are ecstatic with the new daycare option.
They also will become more productive since they will be
happy knowing that their children are located only one
floor down from their offices. The Smiths even have lunch
with their children, leading to a big increase in their
morale. The Smiths will benefit from the next work-life
practice that the hotel is adopting.
Flexible Work Arrangement
 The second most requested benefit on the survey to
improve work-life balance was in regards to offering
a flexible work arrangement, where employees are
able to work flexible hours or days instead of a
traditional nine-to-five workday.
 Restful Sleep Hotel recognized the importance of
offering this option to improve work-life balance. Many
of the employees wanted to work earlier when their
kids were in school and be at home in the early
afternoon. The hotel announced that employees were
able to work one day a week from home and could
work flexible hours the other four days.
 For example,
accountant Dave likes
to get to the office by 7
A.M. and be home by 3
P.M. to coach his son's
baseball team. As long
as employees work
eight hours a day, they
have the flexibility of
choosing their start and
finish time. The next
benefit that the hotel
will offer impacts
vacation and personal
time.
NOTES
• Creates good morale. When an employer
offers child care, it shows employees that they
are valuable enough to deserve the
convenience of having an onsite babysitter.
Employees feel valued and appreciated and,
most importantly, motivated.
• Improves productivity. a provider of
employee-sponsored child care, found that 90
percent of parents using a full service, on-site
day care center reported increased
concentration and productivity on the job. An e
• mployee’s attention is on work and not
elsewhere. Helps retain and attract
employees. In that same Bright
Horizons survey, 23 percent of parents turned
down a job change offer or refrained from
pursuing employment options due to the
benefit of having on-site child care. In addition,
90 percent of new parents stated that on-site
day care was a deciding factor in returning to
work.
Example Of CEO
 leaders of prominent companies are setting
examples by prioritizing themselves, their
families and their health over spending long
hours in the office.
 YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki makes sure
that she gets home by 6 p.m. every night to
have dinner with her five children.
