1.1 Science is Part of Daily Life

What is Science?
What is science?

 Science
is the study of natural
phenomena.
 So, what do you understand about
natural phenomena?
 Can you give a few examples?

Natural phenomena
are events that
occur on their own
(naturally) in our
surroundings.  Is flash flooding a natural phenomena?

(It is not caused by

humans!)
Importance of Science in Everyday Life
Medicine
• Discovery of vaccines prevent diseases such as polio and tuberculosis
• Advanced surgery techniques makes treatment easier. (Laparoscopic
surgery – using fibre optic camera)

Communication
• The development of satellites allow live telecast of events
• The development of smart phones allow us to be connected to every
corner of the world

Agriculture
• Hydroponic method allows the growing of plants without soil
• Invention od better fertilizers and higher quality seeds increases yield of
crops.
Importance of Science in Everyday Life

Construction
• Buildings can be made more resistant to earthquakes and this
saves more lives.
• Taller buildings can be build with development of stronger
constructions and creative designs.

Transportation
• Travel time has been cut short with the development of
aeroplanes that fly longer distances (Example: Non-stop flight
from Auckland, New Zealand to Doha, Qatar takes 17 hours
30 minutes for a distance of 14,539 km’s)
• Beijing - Shanghai High Speed Railway, Jinghu High Speed
Railway for short, finishes the 1,318km's distance between the
two cities in 4.5 hours.

teacher.
 Read and understand the instructions of the experiment
beforehand.
 Use the chemicals and apparatus correctly and carefully.
 Eating, drinking and playing are prohibited in the
laboratory.
 Do not take any apparatus and chemicals out of the
laboratory.
Rules and Safety Measures in the Laboratory

 After
using, keep the apparatus and chemicals out of the
laboratory.
 Make sure the place to conduct the experiments is always
neat and clean.
 Washall the apparatus and throw away waste materials
according to the correct procedures.
 Wash your hands with soap and water before leaving the
laboratory.
