1. Introduction
1.1 Background
Civil Engineering is the versatile field of engineering which incorporates structural,
highway, bridge, irrigation, foundation, hydropower and many more. Structural
engineering is a vital part of all other aspects of civil engineering works. It ensures not
only safe but also economic design.
At the present time, the development is being taken place at such an alarming rate
causing the need of more advanced and sophisticated technology to cope with the
changing situation. In context of Nepal, Kathmandu city is urbanizing with the building
construction at every corner of the city. Due to this rapid growth of the cities and the
problem of scarcity of the land, the necessity to design the multistory building seems
inevitable. Kathmandu city is no more exception to this problem . Besides, earthquake
has also pronounced effect on the design of the multistoried building. Earthquake is the
greatest and the most unpredictable natural disaster that can cause the rapidly worse
scenario in the human life and property.
As we know, Kathmandu lies in the earthquake prone zone, i.e. Zone V, it is obvious
that the designer need to emphasize on the seismic analysis while designing the
multistoried building.
A designer has to design various kinds of structures such as simple building to a
multistoried building, thin shells, bridges etc. In these structures, loads are subjected in
various forms like concentrated loads, uniformly distributed loads, uniformly varied
loads, earthquake loads, dynamic loads or random loads etc. Then the structure
transfers its loads to the supports and then ultimately to the ground. During the transfer
of the loads, the members of the structure are again subjected to various internal forces
like the axial force, shear forces, bending and torsional moments. So, the consideration
of loads during the design phase is very important. Structural analysis deals with
analyzing these internal forces in the members of the structures. Structural Design
deals with sizing various members of the structures to resist the internal forces to
which they are subjected during their effective life span. Unless the proper Structural
Detailing Method is adopted, the structural design will be no more effective.
The Indian Standard Code of Practice should be thoroughly adopted for proper analysis,
design and detailing with respect to safety, economy, stability and strength.
The project of our group is a “ Analysis And Design Of Seismic Resistance Multi
Storied Residential Building “ located at Kathmandu Valley. A Residential Building, is
a form of building whose more than half of the floor Area is used for dwelling purpose.
As per the standards, residential building or any building structure exceeding three storey
in ground coverage required structural analysis , design and details of the reinforcement.
This Project work “ Analysis And Design Of Seismic Resistance Multi Storied
Residential Building “ located at Kathmandu Valley is a completely new project will
be undertaken by us under the guidance of our project Advisor. The project will consist
of structural analysis, Design and Structural detailing of five Storied residential building
at kathmandu valley.
1.2 Analysing Part:

1.1.1 Planning and Preparing Building Drawing.

 Ground Floor Plan
 Typical Floor Plan
 Section Through Staircase
 Elevation

1.1.2 Calculation of the Loads on the Structure

 Gravity loads ( Dead load and live load)
 Earthquake loads (Lateral loads)

1.1.3. Analysis of frame and structural elements after load calculations

 Frame
 Grid

1.1.4. Design of Structural Element

1.1.5. Design of Super Structure
2. Objectives of the Project:
The specific objectives of the project work are as follows:
 To get the knowledge to plan and complete an individual design project in the field
of civil engineering under the supervision of project Advisor.
 To analyze the building manually using appropriate method of analysis.
 To analyze the building using standard software ETAB.
 To design the structural elements.
 To develop the Self Confidence to Attain the Similar Project in the near future as
professional , and to give the client full Satisfaction
3. Scopes of Project:
a) Identification of the type of the building, space occupied and the requirements of
the building.
b) Calculation of the different types of loads that the building has to resist.
c) Preliminary design for the geometry of structural elements.
d) Determination of the various lateral forces that the structural system has to bear.
Determination of fundamental time period by free vibration analysis
e) Calculation of base shear and vertical distribution of equivalent earthquake load.
f) Identification of load cases and load combination cases.
g) ETAB Modeling and analysis.
h) Design of RCC frame members, walls, foundation, staircase, and other by limit
state method of design
i) Detailing of individual members and preparation of drawings as a part of working
construction document.
4. Principles of earthquake resistant building
Every building structure is expected to experience moderate to major earthquake
during its life period. Design of building structures should follow the principle of
earthquake resistant design. A well designed earthquake resistant building should be
able to:
a) Resist minor earthquake without damage.
b) Resist major earthquake without collapse but with some structural as well as non-
structural damage.
5. Statement Of The Project

 Utility of building : Residential building

 No. of storey : G+4
 Location : Kathmandu Valley
 Software to be Used:
- AutoCAD 2007
- ETAB
- Microsoft Office ( Word, Excel, Power point)
6. Literature Review
We are mainly dealing with seismic analysis and structural design of
RCC framed concrete structure. Our main focus will be on obtaining
design output by limit state method on basis of structural design
incorporating seismic considerations.
 Earthquake is the natural phenomena caused by release of seismic
wave from the earth surface from a faint tremor to a wild motion
due to sudden release of energy stored to the rocks beneath the
earth surface. It occur in clusters. It dates as old as earths history
itself, however, our knowledge and interpretations about their
behaviour and ways to minimize damages due to them is recent.
Most of the earthquake are minor and go un-noticed but the major
ones, though occasional are responsible for huge loss of life and
property. so, we take literature review reference as IS building
codes (IS 456:2000 , IS 1893 (Part 1 & Part 2):2000 etc.) and seniors
report.
7. Methodology
In methodology we will use different types of software, tools and methods of design
to calculate different types of load(axial force, shear force and moments) Which
occurs in the building. The following stage Will be involved in the analysis and design
of five storey building.
7.1 LOAD CALCULATION
Load calculation will be calculated using the NBC 105: 1994 as reference.
7.2 PRELIMINARY DESIGN
The tentative size of structural elements are determined through the preliminary
design so that after analysis the pre assumed dimensions might not differed
considerably, thus making the final design both safe and economical.
Tentative sizes of various elements having determined as follow:
7.3 METHODS AND TOOLS FOR ANALYSIS:
For analysis, different software are available during these days.
Concerning to our project, we are going to use ETAB.
