AMONG ANIMALS
■ Suffer from stress, boredom and confinement.
■ The animal bonds with their family or relatives are broken when they
got sold or traded to other zoos.
■ Depression not only happen toward humans, but also animals.
■ In United Kingdom, 54% of elephants experience behavioral problems
and lions spend 48% of their time pacing.
■ STEREOTYPY � A repetitive or ritualized behavior caused by the
boredom of confinement.
■ Examples :- Excessive licking, self – mutilation and trunk – swinging.
SOME ZOOS JUST KILL THEIR
SURPLUS ANIMAL.
■ Approximately 3 000 to 5 000 animals are killed each year at zoos in
Europe.
■ Baby animals brings in visitor and money, but this incentive to breed
new baby animals leads to overpopulation.
■ Surplus animals are sold not only to other zoos, but also to circuses,
canned hunting facilities and even for slaughter.
■ Marius, a health two year old giraffe was killed by Copenhagen Zoo to
prevent inbreeding.
■ Ned, the Asian elephant was born at an accredited zoo, but later
confiscated from an abusive circus trainer.
TILIKUM DIED FOR HIS FREEDOM
■ Tilikum is an orca who was imprisoned at SeaWorld for nearly three
decades.
■ When, he was two years old the marine “cowboys” take him from his
real family.
■ He was forced to live in tiny tanks and cramped enclosures, unable to
use his echolocation, hear or see his relatives, swim long distances.
■ Trained to eat what he was given and to do what he was told.
■ SeaWorld use him as its chief sperm. Bred 21 times. Eleven of his
offspring died before he did.
