 Students will learn about the Mexican Revolution.

 Students will be able to analyze the causes and


effects of the Mexican Revolution.

 Students will learn about important key figures of the


Mexican Revolution.

 Students will learn about the Adelitas and analyze if


the revolution was either a failure or a success.

 Students will be able to write sentences and they will


engage in discussions

What is the Mexican Revolution?
 The Mexican Revolution was an armed
struggle that began in 1910 and ended in
1920. It occurred because many Mexicans
were tired of the injustices of the government.

 The revolution ended el Porfiriato and Mexico


established a new constitution.

 Two important figures of the revolution were


Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata.

Porfirio Diaz/el Porfiriato

 He ruled Mexico for more than 30 years, a period


known as the Porfiriato. His motto was “Paz, Orden,
y Progresso.”

 While he was the president, the economy grew and


he brought technological changes.

 To maintained power, he used The Pan o Palo (bread


or stick) philosophy. The bread was for the wealthy
and the stick was the brutal force he used against
his enemies and the masses.

 His government marginalized the poor and benefited


the rich.

Emiliano Zapata
 A symbol of the revolution.

 He proposed El Plan de
Ayala which called for
Madero’s removal and
demanded land reform and
the delivery of land for the
peasants.

 His mottos: “Tierra y Libertad”


and La tierra es para el que
la trabaja( “The land is for
those who work it”)

Francisco Madero

 He wrote El Plan de San Luis with


the motto “Sufragio efectivo no
reeleccion” which called for an
armed rebellion against Diaz.

 However, when he hold power, he


forgot what he had promised
which displeased Zapata.

Las Adelitas/ Soldaderas

 Las Adelitas were women who


fought in the revolution. They
are also know as the
Soldaderas. The majority of
them were unmarried.

 They did several things and


domestic chores. For instance
they seized guns, horses, and
women, prepared the meals,
washed the clothes and served
as a nurses.

Effects of the Mexican Revolution

 Porfirio Diaz was removed from power.

 A new constitution was created.

 A new political party was created (PRI).

 More than 2 million people were killed.
