CIVIL ENGINEERING
KINETIC ENERGY

• It is an abundant energy of movement.

• They have the availability to create movement that can be harnessed and produce
energy such as wind power, hydro-electric power and thermal power.
• The kinetic energy increases by a factor of four when the speed of the material is
doubled.
INTRODUCTION

• This electro-kinetic road ramp is a method of generating electricity by harnessing

the kinetic energy of automobiles that drive over the road.
• The road ramp was invented by Peter Hughes, an electrical and mechanical engineer
who is employed by Highway Energy Systems Ltd.
• Harnessing Kinetic energy involves building and maintaining machine to allow the
movement to effectively generate work such as wind mills, hydro-electric turbines
and large solar panel.
APPLICATIONS

The proposed applications for the road ramp are:-

• Powering street and traffic lights.
• Heating roads in the winter to prevent ice from forming.
• Ventilating tunnels to reduce pollution.
ADVANTAGES

The advantages of kinetic roads are:-

• Production of renewable energy.
• Availability of abundant resource.
• Low Maintenance.
• Very Safe.
• It causes low discomfort to passengers.
• The effectiveness of beng exponentially proportional to its velocity.
DISADVANTAGES

The disadvantages of using kinetic roads:-

• High initial cost.
• The challenge of keeping the movement constant.
• The expense of harnessing the kinetic roads.
• Effectively handling friction.
• The limitation of only large materials producing substantial energy.
• Insufficient energy creation as compared to other sources.
WORKING

• New materials will be developed to take advantage of the piezoelectric effect where
passing vehicle causes stress on the road surface, producing voltage.
• The materials need to withstand high strength, and provide a good balance between
cost and the energy they produce.
• The system we develop will then convert mechanical energy into electric energy to
power things such as street lamp, traffic light and electric car charging point.
• It could be also be used to provide other smart street benefit, such as real time traffic
volume monitoring.
ESTIMATION

• 15 p of Kilowatt hour to power a street lamp. Therefore 2,000 to 4,000 lights can cost
operators which in the UK tend to be local authorities, or the Highways Agency for
motorways and trunk roads approximately between E1,800 and E3,600 per day.
• Researchers say the cost installing and operating new road energy harvesting
technology would be around 20% of this cost.
CONCLUSION

• This source of electricity is good one and should be used in more places around the
world.
• It is very practical and useful.
