I Can

… differentiate Heat from

Temperature, and
… understand the three modes of
heat transfer: Conduction,
Convection, and Radiation.
Heat
The thermal energy that is being
transferred from one object to another
because of temperature difference.

Temperature
A measure of the degree of hotness
or coldness of an object.
Mechanisms of Heat Transfer
Heating is the process of increasing
the internal energy.
Cooling is the process of
decreasing internal energy.
2 General Ways
Wherein Heating Can Occur:
1. From a temperature difference, with
energy moving from the region of higher
temperature to a lower temperature;
2. From an object gaining energy by way of
an energy form conversion.
Ways in Transferring Heat

1. Conduction
2. Convection
3. Radiation
Conduction
- Direct transfer of heat from one object to
another.
(by touching)
- The transfer of energy from molecule to
molecule.
- Occurs in solid.
- Transfers heat from a hotter object to a cooler
object.
Conductors – through which heat energy pass.
Nonconductors/Insulators – Materials that do not allow
heat to pass through.
Convection

- The movement of liquids or gases from a colder

region to a warmer region producing a current.
- Occurs in liquids and gases.
- Warm particles rise, cool particles fill in space
below.

Wind is produced due to the unequal heating of the

earth’s surface.
Radiation
- Involves the form of energy called radiant
energy – energy that moves through space.
- The transfer of energy is in the form of invisible
waves. (electromagnetic wave)

Radiant Energy includes heat that is transmitted by

radiation.
Radiant Heat is the part of the EM wave that makes us
feel warm.
