Early sculptures were mostly associated with
magical and religious practices. Prehistoric
people from the Old Stones Age used ivory,
bone or soft stone to create small statues.

ANCIENT EGYPT
The first civilization to establish a
recognizable artistic style was Egypt. It
was easily recognizable due to the fact
that human figures were drawn
consistently. By using this, the artist is able
to figure from its easiest angle and this is
used also in paintings and low-relief
sculptures.

During this time, there was a
proliferation of spirituality, religion
and faith which can be seen in many
of the artwork of the period. The
Middle Ages can be further divided
into different movements. The tow
most important are Byzantine Art
and Gothic Art.

RENAISSANCE
A rebirth of classical ideas, the Renaissance saw a
proliferation of artists that tried to capture the ideas of
ancient Greece and Rome. Among these ideas was the
revival of classical art in sculpture as well.

BAROQUE
- Baroque artists of the late 16th to 18th centuries
employed the use of emotions in their pieces. As
renaissance masterpieces did not show any emotions in
their works, the baroque artists employed the elements
of art to express and impress viewers with the dramatic.

MODERN
- Modern art which is closely associated with
modernism, rejected the ideas of the traditional and
went on a new path characterized by self-consciousness.
- Modern Artists experimented with new ways of seeing

MANUNGGUL JAR
The Manunggul jar was one of numerous jars found inside the
Tabon Caves in Lipuun Point, Palawan Philippines. These caves
were believed to be an ancient burial site for the peoples who
lived in the cave.

MAINTUM ANTHROPOMORPHIC POTTERIES
The anthropomorphic secondary burial jars
from Pinol, Maitum, Saranggani Province in
Mindanao date back to the Metal Stage. These
burial ars are made of earthenware designed
and formed like human figures with complete
facial characteristics.
