NetBackup 5.0 Remote Installation - on
TM

Windows
NetBackup™ 5.0 Installation
Windows Remote Installation
• The NetBackup™ Client for Windows based systems installation
package has the ability to push itself to other Windows systems.
• In the NetBackup™ 5.0 release, you can perform a NetBackup™
Master Server, Media Server, or Administration Console
installations to multiple Windows systems from a single Windows
source system.
• You cannot perform remote installs from Windows systems to
UNIX systems, and vice-versa.
• This applies to both Server and Enterprise installations.
NetBackup™ 5.0 Installation
Windows Initial Remote Installation
• Any selection of invalid options are disallowed during the
installation (installation of an administration console on top of a
Media Server).
• All servers that get installed from a single push will use the same
license key entered in the dialog. In the event of an upgrade, this
key will be added to the existing keyring on that Server, enabling
any functionality allowed by it.
• Upgrade Installations
 If the user does not enter a license key, they will still have the
ability to install a Master or Media Server or a Remote
Administration Console. This is only useful when performing
upgrades of systems.
NetBackup™ 5.0 Installation
Windows Initial Remote Installation
• The Installation process is the same on both the Master Server
and the Media Server.
• Both NetBackup™ and Media Manager are distributed on the

option and click Next to install NetBackup™ to remote systems.
NetBackup™ 5.0 Installation

• If the user is performing a remote Master Server installation, the
Master Server name entry will not be presented to the user.
• If performing a Media Server or Administration Console
installation, the ability to set the Media Server or Client name
will not be given, as it will be decided by the name of the
destination system.
• Users performing Master or Media Server installations will be
advised to add the names of all the systems they will be
installing into the Additional Servers field. The install process
will filter out the name of each destination machine as it is being
installed.
NetBackup™ 5.0 Installation
Windows Initial Remote Installation
Choose a Device Database Setting and click Next. There must only
be one Device Database host per NetBackup™ domain.
NetBackup™ 5.0 Installation
Windows Initial Remote Installation
• The user will be prompted to enter a Global Device Database
Host name for a remote Media Server installation.
• All Media Servers that the user performs an installation to in the
course of a single session will share this host name, just as they
will all share the same Master Server.
• To install Media Servers for different Master Servers, the user
will be required to perform multiple remote installs.
• Upgrade Installations
 In an upgrade scenario of a remote system, the global
device database host name will not be changed by the
upgrade. Doing so would create huge problems for the
Media Manager, as well as NetBackup™.

NetBackup 5.0 Client Installation - on Windows
TM
NetBackup™ 5.0 Installation
NetBackup™ Client Installation
• To be able to back up a target machine, Client software must be
installed on it.
• The installation can be accomplished in two ways:
 Locally via an attached CD-ROM device
 Pushed from any Server of the same operating system type
• By definition, your NetBackup™ Server is also a NetBackup™
Client. When you installed the NetBackup™ Server software,
both the NetBackup™ Server and NetBackup™ Client software
were installed on the Server.
NetBackup™ 5.0 Installation
NetBackup™ Client Installation
• The NetBackup™ client setup program for Microsoft Windows
allows you to select appropriate setup and installation options
from a series of windows.
• While the installation is in progress, a dialog window provides
details of the installation and setup progress.
• When complete, a final window indicates the results of the
installation.
 Note You cannot install NetBackup™ client software on
Windows-based systems that currently have the
NetBackup™ Server software installed.
 In these cases, you must first un-install the NetBackup™
Server software.
NetBackup™ 5.0 Installation
NetBackup™ Client Local and Remote Installations
• The NetBackup™ client setup program can be used in a number
of ways:
 Local installations
The setup program installs the client software only on the PC
where the installation is started.
 Remote installations
The setup program scans your network for available clients
where you can install the client software.
 Silent Installations
A silent installation is one where the installation process does
not require interactive input.
It does, however, require input in the form of editing the
silentclient.cmd file before execution.
NetBackup™ 5.0 Installation
NetBackup™ New and Upgrade Client Installations
• The NetBackup™ client setup program recognizes two types of
installations:
 New installations
The setup program does not detect an existing version of
NetBackup™ client software on the client PC.
 Upgrade installations
Using Windows registry information, the setup program
detects an existing version of NetBackup™ client software.
NetBackup™ 5.0 Installation
NetBackup™ New Client Installation
• NetBackup™ setup enables you to specify one set of
configuration options to be used for all new installations. For
typical and custom installations these options include:
 Specifying Master and Media Server names
 For Custom installations only:
 Specifying an installation directory (local install only).
 Entering bpcd and bprd port numbers.
 Starting the NetBackup™ Client Service automatically
after the installation has completed or manually.
 Starting the NetBackup™ Client Job Tracker
automatically.
 Installing VSP.
 Installing debug symbols.
 Installing the NetBackup™ documentation.
