Or they share some other aspects Discourse Communities and Speech Communities • Communities: group of people who share substantial amounts of time together. • Collectives: groups of people that form around a single repeated interest. • Networks: groups of people that are not as tightly knit as speech communities. Speech communities and spoken and written discourse • A group of people who use the same variety of a language, and who share specific rules for speaking and interpreting speech, such as: social, political, geographical factors, etc. Discourse and Language Choice The people use the language choice in order to communicate accurately they may choose a language. It determined by the domain the language is being used in, such as with family, among friends, and in religious, educational and employment settings.

They control group attitudes (e.g. about immigration, abortion, divorce, etc.) and mental models of group members about specific events and experiences.
