Fuel Supply System system in S.

I engine
1. Fuel Supply System
Components that supply clean fuel to the fuel metering system (fuel pump, fuel
pipes, fuel filters).

2. Air Supply System

Components that supply controlled clean air to the engine (air filter, ducting,
valves).

3. Fuel Metering System

Components that meter the correct amount of fuel (and air) entering the engine
(injectors, pressure regulator, throttle valve).

The exact components used will vary with fuel system type and design.
Types Fuel Supply System in S.I
Engine
Carburetor system
Injection system
Single port injection system
Multi port Injection system
G.D.I system
Fuel pumps
• A.C Mechanical pump
• S.U electrical pump
A.C Mechanical pump
S.U Electrical pump
Carburetor
Functions:
To vaporize the fuel to prepare homogeneous
mixture.
To keep a small a reserve of fuel at a constant
head.
To supply correct amount of air/fuel mixture
at correct strength under all conditions of load
and speed of the engine.
Mixture Strength
Simple carburetor
Defects in Simple Carburetor
• Carburetor will not work at low speed and part
throttle since it is designed for full throttle.
• If it is designed to work at low speed part throttle, it
will deliver richer mixture at high speed.
• The coefficient of discharge for air and fuel vary in
different amounts with change of depression.
• The Cd of air becomes almost constant at certain
value of depression but for fuel Cd gradually
increases.
• So, if the carburetor is set at particular speed, then
supplies rich mixture at high speed and lean mixture
at low speed.
Starting difficulty:
Tickler
Eccentric Choke
Strangler Choke
Adjustable area jet
Idling difficulty
Compensation jet
Difficulty at high speed
Metering rod
Acceleration difficulty
acceleration pump
At higher altitude air density decreases due to fall in atmosphere pressure.
The carburettor which give correct mixture at lower altitude will give rich mixture at
higher altitude.
As altitude increases valve S is opened and engine suction applied to float chamber,
thus decreasing pressure which reduces fuel supply.
Types of carburetor
1. Up-draught
Horizontal draught
Down draught
S.U carburetor
Carter carburetor
Various circuits
Diesel engine fuel supply system
Functions:
o Storing fuel
o Filtering
o Delivery of fuel to injection pump
o Injecting fuel to the engine cylinder
o Controlling the speed of the engine
Injection system
Two types of injection system
1. Common rail injection system
2. Individual pump injection system
