A worm gear drive transmits motion between non-parallel and non-intersecting shafts at a 90 degree angle. It consists of a worm that resembles a screw and a helical worm gear. Worm gear drives can provide large torque and speed reductions of up to 360:1 while operating quietly, but may generate overheating from sliding contact between the meshing teeth. The worm is made of hardened steel while the gear is usually made of bronze.

Employed to transmit motion between non parallel non intersecting shafts.
A worm gear drive consists of a worm (resembles a screw) and the worm gear(special helical gear) The shafts on which the worm and gear are mounted are 90 deg apart. The meshing of the two teeth takes place with sliding action without shock compared to spur, helical, bevel gears. This action while occurring in quiet operation may generate overheating. Possible to have large reduction (360:1) and a high increase of torque. The worms are highly stressed and usually made of case hardened steel. The gear is made of bronzes.
Two Types of Worm Drives
Single Enveloping set The helical gear has its width cut into a concave surface Double Enveloping set The worm has an hour glass shape to provide more contact. TERMINOLOGY Worm is analogues to a screw thread and worm gear is similar to its nut. AxialPitch(pw) –Distance between corresponding points on adjacent teeth. Lead(L) – Axial distance the worm gear(nut) advances during one revolution of the worm. =npw n=Number of starts zgear i worm wg gear nworm
