1 Machines used for Intelligent packaging and their approximate Installation cost

1. Pre-made packaging Machine e.g. rotary packaging machine:

 Wide range of applications and suitable for different range of products and
different sizes of bags
 Adopt PLC (programmable logic controller ).
 Adopt packaging process without manual operation and hence effectively
improves the production efficiency, by saving the labor cost and management
cost.
 Equipped with a variety of electric induction components to ensure smooth
operation and accurate packing.
 The cost of equipment ranges from Rs. 3.5 million to 4.2 million.

2. Flow wrap packing machine:

Flow wrap machine has the following functions:
 Energy storage
 Intelligent empty bag detection
 Good memory function
 It is used for the intelligent packaging of fresh fruits and vegetables.

5 Agriculture produce and its contribution to national exchequer
6
 Agriculture is an applied science which encompasses all aspects of crop
production including horticulture, livestock rearing and fisheries etc.
 Agriculture accounts for 26% of Pakistan’s GDP and employs about 43% of the
labor force directly or indirectly.
 The major agricultural crops include cotton, wheat, rice, sugarcane, fruits and
vegetables.
 Pakistan is Asia’s largest camel market, second-largest apricot and ghee
market and third-largest cotton, onion and milk market.
 Pakistan plays a major role worldwide as a rice exporter, and it annually exports
approximately 2 million tons, which is 10% of the world's trade.
 Cotton is another cash crop of Pakistan, and Pakistan is the world's largest
producer of raw cotton. Cotton exports accounted for 46% of Pakistan’s total
exports.
 All these the cash crops contribute substantially to the national exchequer.
7 Why does Pakistan need intelligent packaging?
 Pakistan has a wide range of agro-climatic condition which is allowing the
country to produce a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. The fruits and
vegetable market in Pakistan were valued at USD 8.0 billion in 2017 and is
expected to register a CAGR of 5.6%.

 However, despite the tremendous size of this market, 35-40% post-harvest

losses are seen in fruits and vegetables.
 The losses are more due to unawareness about the new technology and people
adopt the old processes.
 Poor handling, improper packing and careless transport can increase the
losses. Sometimes these factors can weaken the natural defense against the
pathogens and hence the attack on vegetables and fruit of insects, bacteria, fungi
and other microorganisms becomes easier.
 Therefore, by adopting new technology the losses can be reduced.
