AIM : What are the Different Types

of
Aircraft & Engine Maintenance
and
How are They Recorded?

TOPIC: Types of A/C & Engine Maintenance & how generated

At the End of Today’s Lesson
You will be Able to:
• Define the different types of A & E Maintenance & the
kinds of maintenance work they include.

• Answer questions on Annual & 100 Hour Inspections &

Airworthiness Directives with 100% accuracy.

• Answer basic questions pertaining to the FARs dealing with

A&E maintenance with 100% accuracy.

Presentation
What is Maintenance ? 1

Maintenance is procedures performed to keep

something working properly or in good condition.
Why are we Obligated to Perform Aircraft
Maintenance?
• It’s the Law ( FARs 91 & 121.)

• They say that the owner , operator or certificate

holder is responsible for maintaining the
airworthiness of & the performance of
maintenance on the aircraft, aircraft engines,
propellers, appliances and parts there of
To what Standard must
Maintenance be performed ?
Airworthiness qualities
Resistance to vibration
FAR 43.13 states:
That the condition of whatever was worked on will be
at least equal to the original or properly altered
condition in regard to:

Resistance to deterioration
What Has to be Used………
…When Performing Aircraft & Engine Maintenance
• FAR 43.13:
states that each person performing

maintenance…………. shall use

the tools, equipment and test equipment
necessary to ensure completion of the work in
accordance with accepted industry standards

• & The Maintenance Manual

Who Can Perform Aircraft Maintenance?
• A mechanic
• A repairmen
• “YOU” ?

• Pilot (Any Maintenance ? on any aircraft ?)

• Repair Station ? HOW???????????

• Airlines?
What Are the
Types of Aircraft / Engine Maintenance ?

• Routine Maintenance
• Non-Routine Maintenance
• Condition Based Maintenance
( CBM)
What is Routine Maintenance ?
Routine Maintenance
is Maintenance Done
Over & Over to Assure
Airworthiness
Routine Maintenance
• How can a mechanic find out when Routine
Maintenance has to be performed?

• How can the mechanic find out What has to

be Done in a Routine Maintenance job

• Who or What keeps track of when Routine

Maintenance has to be done
Examples of Routine Maintenance
Are:
• Replacement of Life Limited Parts (LLPs)

• Annual Inspections

• 100 Hour Inspections

• Progressive Inspections
(A check, B check, C check, D check )
What are Life Limited Parts?

• Examples of a Turbine Engine LLPs are?

• A List of LLPs (Where can I Find Them ?)

• Time of Replacement of LLPs are based on

Life Limited Parts
• Aircraft / Engine parts Identified by OEM as having a
limited total life span.

Change What ?Where ?

• Engine LLPs consists of Engine rotor & Critical
Structural Parts.
Are ?
Why
• LLPs Foundare they
in TCDS changed ?
or in the Instructions for Continued
Airworthiness.

• Life span given in hours, cycles or as specified in TCDS.

Time is
• LLPs must be approved by FAA
Based On ?
Contrast 100 hour & Annual Inspections
• When done ?
• Who can do them ?
• Aircraft done on ?
• Minimum Items?
• What if I go over?
Annual vs. 100 hour Inspection

Annual Inspection 100 hour Inspection

• Done yearly on A/C not • Done every 100 hours
used for hire. on A/C used for hire.

• Performed by IA only • Performed by A&P

Minimum requirements for both

are in
FAR 43 Appendix D
Would the Airlines fall under 100 hour or annual Inspections ?

What Type of Maintenance program do the Airlines Use?

CAMP
( continuous Airworthiness Maintenance Program)
for
Commercial Airlines (FAR 121)

Includes Progressive Checks

( A Check, B Check, C Check & D Check)

&
Scheduled Maintenance
Contrast CAMP
with
Annual & 100 Hour Inspections
What is Non-Routine Maintenance ?

It is Maintenance Work done to

address problems or things that are
broken or are not working right.

Give an Example of Non-Routine Maintenance

HOW DOES
THE FAA
GET INVOLVED IN
Non-Routine
AIRCRAFT & ENGINE
MAINTENANCE ?
What is an Airworthiness Directive

• Means by which the FAA notifies the

Owner or Operator of Unsafe Conditions
that exist on an aircraft, engine , appliance
or propeller

Tell me some other “Stuff” you know About ADs

Why are ADs Issued ?
What Information
May We Find in an
AD ?
Airworthiness Directives
• Issued by the FAA.
• Requires owner or operator of an aircraft to check
for or correct an unsafe condition.
• How & when to comply is specified in the AD
• Compliance is mandatory and is the responsibility of
owner or operator.
• Compliance must be recorded in permanent records.
• Emergency ADs can ground the Aircraft
• A/C may be flown to a repair facility via specific
authority or FAA special flight permit.
What is
Condition Based Maintenance?
• Maintenance Program that Monitors the
Conditions of a Gas Turbine Engine &
requires maintenance only when they
deteriorate to a specific level.
• Things are not broken yet, but they are getting
close.

Contrast Routine & Condition Based Maintenance

Condition Based Maintenance
• Maintenance based on condition rather than a
schedule.
• Condition checked by inspections, checks,
computer monitoring, Trend Monitoring, &
Computer Analysis & Algorithms.
• Engines allowed to remain in service as long as
monitoring systems indicate they are
serviceable.
• Does not supersede replacement of life limited
parts
• Must be Approved by the FAA
ALL MAINTENANCE WORK
MUST BE DOCUMENTED.
• Documented ! What does that Mean? ?

A Computer or Written record

of
Information, Evidence or Proof
Where / In What do WE Document
MAINTENANCE WORK

In
• Log Books ( hard copy or Electronic)
• Maintenance Paper Work & Job Cards
• Computerized Maintenance & Planning System
• 337 Forms,
• Routine / Non-Routine Cards
• TODs (task oriented document)

A HOT QUESTION
What are some reasons behind Why
MAINTENANCE WORK MUST BE DOCUMENTED.

1. Required by FAR 43.9

2. As a troubleshooting aid
3. For use in an accident investigation
4. To know that something has or has not been done.
5. Assure safety
6. Maintain the aircraft’s or engine’s value

JETpardy
• Found in FAR 43 Appendix D

• Must be Performed by an IA

• Requires both continuous scheduled

maintenance & continuous Inspections.

• ADs

• An inspection done on aircraft for hire.

Do After: Write the correct answers
to the following
• Define Non Routine (unscheduled) Maintenance.

• An annual inspection is completed on 11/11/2017,

that inspection is valid until ( be specific).

B. What’s a draw back of one over the other.
C. The opinion of the flying public, the mechanic
and aircraft owner / operator on these types of
maintenance.
What they think is good & bad about them.

What is Preventive Maintenance?(1)

• Simple or minor operations & replacement

of small parts not requiring complex
assembly operation.

• Items Listed in FAR 43 Appendix A
