What is a Map?

A Map is a symbolic representation of

selected characteristics of a place, usually
drawn on a flat surface.
Types Of Maps

● Political Map
● Physical Map
● Topographic Map
● Climate Map
● Economic or Resource Map
● Thematic Map
● Road Map
What is Geographic Information System ???
Geographical Information System:

● GIS is a computer system for capturing, checking, storing and

displaying data related to position on Earth’s Surface.

● GIS can show different kinds of data on the map.

● Uses information that includes location i.e:-

Latitude,Longitude,address or a ZIP code.
Major Areas Of GIS Application

Facilities Management
Environment and Natural Resource management
Street Network
Planning and Engineering
Land Information System
Types of GIS Data
Raster Data Type: represented as Single Square Cells.

Vector Data Type: represented as

points,lines,polygons,regions,TIN(triangulated irregular
Networks).

Attributions: A piece of information which determines the

properties of a field or tag in a database or a string of
characters in a display.
Directions on a Map
Cardinal Directions:- North, East,
South,West
Intermediate Directions:- Northeast,
Southeast, Southwest, Northwest.
Geographic Coordinate System
Components:-
longitude:- Geographic coordinate that specifies
east-west position of a point on Earth’s Surface.
latitude:- Angular distance north or South from
Equator of a point on Earth’s Surface.
elevation:- Height above or below a fixed
Reference Point.

Future Scope of GIS:
Scientific visualization and computer graphics will be increasingly integrated with
GIS

New capabilities, especially animated and highly interactive maps, will be

developed.

GIS is critical to new scientific trends, especially multidisciplinary research and

global systems studies.

Integration (multiple formats, databases and outputs) • Accessibility (anytime,

anywhere)

Reliability (no data loss)
