INTRODUCTION
 A Battery convert chemical energy into
the electrical energy.

Dept. of ECE, SJCIT

Alkaline battery(primary battery)

 Alkaline battery is a
type of primary cell
(non-rechargeable).
 Nominal cell voltage
of 1.5V.
 Construction , Last
longer , & Variable
sizes.

Dept. of ECE, SJCIT

Li-ion Battery(secondary battery)
 Constructed using graphite rod,

Lithium cobalt oxide as electrodes

and lithium

hexafluorophosphate(electrolyte)

 Nominal cell voltage of 3.6-3.7V.

 High specific power(300W/kg).

 Li-ion needs a protection circuit.

It is more expensive than most

other batteries
Problems with conventional batteries

 Lower specific power compared to fuels.

 Weight and size.
 High charging time.
 Environmental hazards.
 Explosion, corrosion, leakage.
 High cost.
 Terminal voltage constraints.

Paper battery
WHAT IS PAPER
BATTERY ????

Dept. of ECE, SJCIT 9

Flexible, ultra-thin energy storage and

production device

Formed by combining carbon nanotubes with a

conventional sheet of cellulose-based paper

Acts as both a high-energy battery and super

capacitor

This combination allows the battery to provide

both long-term, steady power production and

bursts of energy

Dept. of ECE, SJCIT

PRINCIPLE

 The battery produces electricity in the same way as the

conventional lithium-ion batteries, but all the components

have been incorporated into a lightweight, flexible sheet of

paper.

 The devices are formed by combining cellulose with an

infusion of aligned carbon nanotubes.

CARBON NANOTUBE
 Carbon nanotubes are allotropes of

carbon with a cylindrical

nanostructure.

 They exhibit extraordinary strength

and unique electrical properties, and

are efficient thermal conductors.

 Nanotubes are members of

the fullerene structural family, the

diameter of a nanotube is on the order

of a few nanometers

PAPER BATTERY
CONSTRUCTION AND
WORKING

Dept. of ECE, SJCIT 13

CONSTRUCTION

 Step 1: Black carbon ink is applied on a cellulose-based paper.

 Step 2: Black Carbon(cathode) ink is being spread on a paper spread

on the paper.
 Step 3: A thin lithium(anode)film is laminated over the exposed

cellulose surface.
 Step 4: The cellulose paper is heated at 80 degree C for 5 minutes.

 Step 5: Next, the film is peeled off from the substrate.

 Step 6: The film acts as electrodes of the paper battery. One film is

connected to the electrolyte LTO (Li4Ti5012) and another film is

pasted to the electrolyte LCO (LiCo02).
 Step 7: Next, connect a LED on both the ends of the battery and

check its functionality.

WORKING OF PAPER BATTERY

1.Batteries produce electrons through a chemical reaction between

electrolyte and metal in the traditional battery.

2. Chemical reaction in the paper battery is between electrolyte and carbon

nanotube.

3. Electrons collect on the negative terminal of the battery and flow along a
connected wire to the positive terminal

Dept. of ECE, SJCIT

WORKING OF PAPER BATTERY

4. Electrons must flow from the negative to the positive terminal for the
chemical reaction to continue.

5. “electrolyte-permeated gel state”, This helps ions to smooth move,

reducing resistance, allowing the batteries to charge faster.
