Aurangzeb And After (1658-1707)

• The beginning of the decline of the Mughal empire


• He ruled over most of the Indian subcontinent (Current India
- except kerala and few parts of Tamil nadu, Nepal, Pakistan,
Afghanistan, Bangladesh). His reign lasted for 49 years from
1658 until his death in 1707.
• Aurangzeb did not show much interest in art and
architecture
• In Aurangzeb's reign (1658–1707) squared stone and marble
was replaced by brick or rubble with stucco ornament(used
as a decorative coating for walls and ceilings, and as a
sculptural and artistic material in architecture.)
• Important buildings are
-Badshahi mosque -Moti masjid
-Lalbaugh Fort -Buri-I-Shamli
-Bibi ka baqbara

• The Main Prayer Hall is composed


of seven distinctive parts, which
are separated by arches. Three of
the arches have white marble
double domes, while the rest have
flat domes.
• All parts of the Prayer Hall are heavily decorated.Includes Fresco(Fresco method of painting water-
based pigments on freshly applied plaster, usually on wall surfaces ) and stucco( used as a
decorative coating for walls and ceilings, and as a sculptural and artistic material in
architecture)work and marble. Outside, stone, marble, and sandstone make up the mosque’s
design features.
Moti Masjid

• The Moti masjid is a white marble mosque inside the Red Fort complex in Delhi.
• It is very small, just 40 by 55 feet.
• The courtyard of the Moti Masjid has side arcades(a covered passage with arches along one or both sides) and arched
recessions and the main sanctuary facade beyond.
• The sanctuary is roofed with three bulbous domes built of light white marble and stand on the red sandstone walls.
• Each marble musulla(prayer carpet)on the floor is decrorated with a double outline of black and mustard yellow polished
limestone.
Gyanvapi Mosque (1664)

• Located at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
