SIGNAL PROCESSING
INTRODUCTION

 Extraction of static background from videos

 Relies on temporal coherence of pixels.

 Can be employed in moving object detection by subtraction

 Can be employed in photography – crowd removal

BACKGROUND EXTRACTION

 The pixel value variation is stable in background scene.

 Whereas, variation of the moving objects is a pulsation.

 So we can assume most frequently occur value as a colour vector of background pixel
PROPOSED SYSTEM

 A simple background extraction algorithm for videos is proposed

 Divides the intensity levels of each image pixel into different clusters

 For each pixel the histogram of the clusters for sequential frames is

calculated for each color channel

 Cluster with highest recurrence is chosen as the static background for that pixel

 Iterating for each pixel to generate the whole background image.

EXPERIMENT

 Average time to finish the algorithm was approximately 3 minutes.

 40 frames were selected for testing.

 Image size 720 × 1280

 43 clusters with size 6 were taken.

OBSERVATIONS

 As the number of frames increases, perfect background can be reconstructed without the traces of
moving objects.

 The cluster index of R,G,B channels for the pixel location (300,600) were concentrated at 10,1,8
respectively.

 The cluster index of R,G,B channels for the pixel location (500,1000) were concentrated at 38,
24,32 respectively.
