DEMOGRAPHIC
INFORMATION CONT.
•Range of writing levels: 1 scribble stage, 2 pictures, 3 writing scribble, 4
symbolic/mock letters, 5 strings of conventional letters, 6 adding sound/letter
relationships, 7 group of letters.
•Curriculum Program: Reading Wonders
•Instructional approach: Have students practice writing letters while saying the
sound, sounding out words, blending sounds to create a work
•Special writing programs: iReady
•Teacher tools used to assess students learning: Rubrics are used to assess
students learning. Kindergarten rubrics have three different grades, MP
which stands for meets with proficiency, DP which stands for developing
proficiency, and NY which stands for not yet.
SURVEY METHOD
• My survey consisted of 8 questions about writing, and a line to write their
name at the end.
• First, I had students sitting on the carpet and I went over the worksheet
on the projector.
• Then, I handed each students a paper and they went back to their seats.
• I told them to point to the number we were on and I read the question for
them, then they would color a happy face if their answer was yes, and the
sad face if their answer was no.
• I was walking around and monitoring students and would move on to the
next question when I saw everyone was done.
• There was 1 student absent the day I did my survey.

Implementation:
ATTITUDE
•All but one student in the class likes to write, so to keep them from hating
writing I think my MT and I have to keep them engaged.
• I want to keep students engaged in writing by creating a lesson in which they
can choose to write about a topic they are interested in.
•More than half of the students think writing is hard. To help those who think
writing is hard, they need more practice so they can get more proficient in
writing.
•One idea I can present to my MT is that I can work with students who think writing is hard. I can figure
out what part of writing they think is hard then I will be able to work with them from there to find an
easier strategy that make work better for them.

•My MT and I can work together to come up with an idea for future writing
lesson ideas that can help students to get better while also staying engaged.

wouldn't mind if she did.
INTERESTS
Implementations:
•Based on my results, my MT and I can continue to have students practice writing
and learning their alphabet by tracing their letters. For the two students who don’t
like to trace their letters I can find a better way to have them practice writing, or I
can try and get them to like tracing their letters.
• To get them to like tracing their letters I can make the tracing worksheets look more engaging
and have it as an activity so that they may be more engaged in tracing.
• One idea I can present to my MT in trying to get students to engaged is to create writing
activities, rather than just worksheets or homework. If they see writing as a game it can be more
engaging. One example could be to play a review game and have them write their answers rather
than saying it. Keeping points will help to keep them engaged because they want to win.

•Writing your name on each page in their workbooks are not recommended but
my MT does allow them to if they want to practice. Because most students but
not all like to practice writing their names on their papers, I think it is best to keep
it as an option.

•84% of the students like writing

LEARNING STYLE
Implementations:
•I can see from the data that most of the students have the same learning style.
•Four students don’t like to trace their letters in the air with their fingers. Because the
number of students who like to trace in the air is so high, I think my MT and I could
continue to use this method. Eventually we can think of other ways to practice
getting familiar with the shape of each letter, such as building it with blocks and
make it more of a hands on activity.
•For the students who don’t enjoy practicing writing on the whiteboard, I can get
them to like writing on the whiteboard
•One idea I can present to my MT to try to get students to like to writing on the
whiteboard is to create games involving the whiteboard. I noticed the students like
activities with competition so having games involving points and a winner may get
them to enjoy the whiteboards.

Implementations:
WORK HABITS
•For the 5 students who don’t like to write at home, I can infer that it is because they
don’t like doing homework at home, but it could also be that they like the school
environment better.
•To get them to like practicing writing when they go home I can work with my MT to
find ideas on how we can give the students writing assignments at home that they will
enjoy. We can also give them ideas of fun writing activities that they could try, not for
assignments but for fun. This way those who like to write at home can and those who
don’t, won’t have to. I can suggest to my MT to talk to parents to allow their child to
engage in enjoyable writing activities at home.
•I think the number of students who like to write pictures with their drawing is high
enough to keep this as a part of certain lessons.
• To get the two who don’t like to draw pictures with their writing, I can talk with my MT to find ideas on how
to get them to like drawing. We could also find an alternate route for them to do, something that they are
more interested in. I can ask students what they are interested in to find out what activities they would
enjoy.
CONCLUSION
•After gathering all the data from my student writing survey, I gained
more knowledge on how the students in my field experience
classroom feel about writing.
•I will keep into consideration all the information gathered through this
survey when I am creating my lesson plan for the future.
•Most of the students attitudes, interests, learning styles and work
habits are very similar. I will still try to work towards the lower number
side of each question to try and get all the students on the same page.
•I will go over my results with my MT so we can think of ways to reach
the needs and interests of all the students. She will also be able to
help me think of lesson ideas that would be appropriate.
