INTRODUCTION

In textile industries, various types of dyes are used to colour their products. The dye containing
Wastewater is usually released into the nearby drains, streams, water bodies etc.

Water pollution due to discharge of coloured effluents from textile industries is one of the major
environmental concerns globally.

Dyes impart colour to the water and it has been identified as toxic mutagenic and carcinogenic. They
cause severe damage to human organs, such as; dysfunction of kidney, reproductive system, liver
and central nervous system

4
Introduction

•These dyes can be removed by various methods namely :-

1. Biological
2. Chemical
3. Physical

5
Introduction

1.Biological method

•This includes microbial decolourization of textile dyes precisely by using bacteria

(aerobic and anaerobic conditions), fungi and algae, and involvement of various
enzymes.
•It has been observed that the biological treatment is not proven satisfactory for colour
elimination.

6
Introduction

2. Chemical method

•It includes number of processes such as coagulation or flocculation combined with

floatation, electrochemical process etc.
•This method is proven to be expensive and is not preferred as it causes disposal problem
due to the accumulation of concentrated sludge.

7
Introduction

•3. Physical method

•It includes a number of methods such as membrane filtration processes and various
adsorption techniques.
•It is seen that adsorption is an effective and best equilibrium process for the removal of dye
from the wastewater.
