This project aims at bringing up the bad food practices in our college.
We went around the campus collecting information about food wastage.
By virtue of this project we will take the attention to the amount of wasted food
And will aim to take some measures which will prevent some wastage of food.
We would also like to provide some insights into world food wastage and certain
facts about it.
KEY FACTS
In 2017-18, total food grain production was estimated at 275 million tonnes (MT).
India is the largest producer (25% of global production), consumer (27% of world
consumption) and importer (14%) of pulses in the world.
Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year
approx. 1.3 billion tonnes gets lost or wasted.
The amount of food lost or wasted every year is equivalent to more than half of the
world’s annual cereals crop i.e. 2.3 billion tonnes in 2009-10.
The total volume of water used each year to produce food that is lost or wasted is
equivalent to annual flow of Russia’s Volga River, or three times the volume of Lake
Geneva.
Similarly, 1.4 billion hectares of land-28 percent of the world’s agricultural area is used
annualy to produce food that is lost or wasted.
Agriculture is responsible for a majority of threats to at risk plant and animal species
tracked by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
FOOD WASTAGE IN LPU CAMPUS
SURVEY RESULT
Currently food wastage in India is a major issue Since every year 10 million people
are died due to starvation only 8% of which are due to some disaster. There are
many places such as prestigious colleges and hostels in which lots of food is
wasting and very few people are concerned about it. In this regard we concluded
the situation at LPU.
There is a rough statistical data for food wastage is available which clearly shows
that how much food is wasted on a daily basis.
On an average around 500 Kg of food is wasted per day in the campus. In a month
it goes up to 15000 Kg. The most important thing is that an average person
requires 1.5 Kg food per day. In this way we wasted the food which is sufficient for
living 2500 people for a month.
CONCLUSION
We think that this is a very serious issue which should be resolved as soon as
possible i.e. We have to find out the ways in which the wastage of food can be
minimized so that the people who are suffering from hunger/starvation can get
their lives in terms of food.
There could be various possible solutions for reducing the food wastage such as:
With the use of this data we can calculate the expected number of people on a
particular day which gives us general estimation of how much food should be
cooked on each day.
STEPS TO TAKE
Analyze the wastage of each type of food on a daily basis and try to come up with
the optimal quantity of ingredients that has to be used while cooking.
Mess should have a device which keeps track of how many people are coming on a
particular day for breakfast/lunch/dinner.
Daily announcement by taking help of warden.
Ask mess staff not to give in huge quantity if they need they will come again.
Door to door announcement.
Proposal to take fine.
WHEN WE WASTE FOOD
We are wasting money……
We waste energy…….
We waste water……..
We waste resources….
We are the reasons people are dying because of not getting food
