The French invented the first metal helmets
that could protect their soldiers in trenches
from the shrapnel of exploding artillery
shells. The helmet was made of mild steel
and weighed approximately a kilo. It was
covered with khaki cloth to prevent
reflection and a deflector crest was added
along the helmet's axis to enhance
protection. But, a complication arose that
caused more deaths than expected. What
caused the deaths?
If the helmet was pierced by shell splinters,
pieces of dirty cloth were carried into the
wound, making it difficult to treat.
The origin of kopi luwak is closely connected with
the history of coffee production in Indonesia. In
the early 18th century the Dutch established
the cash-crop coffee plantations in their colony in
the Dutch East Indies islands of Java and Sumatra,
including Arabica coffee introduced from Yemen.
The Dutch prohibited the native farmers and
plantation workers from picking coffee fruits for
their own use. Still, the native farmers wanted to
have a taste of the famed coffee beverage.
Soon, they found a way to drink coffee that was
even more aromatic. What is kopi luwak?
In the late 1700s, a large percentage of
Europeans feared the tomato. A nickname
for the fruit was the “poison apple”
because it was thought that aristocrats got
sick and died after eating them, but the
truth of the matter was different. What
caused their deaths?
Wealthy Europeans used pewter plates,
which were high in lead content. Because
tomatoes are so high in acidity, it resulted in
lead poisoning.
X led a tumultuous life. He was notorious for brawling,
even in a time and place when such behavior was
commonplace, and the transcripts of his police records
and trial proceedings fill several pages. On 29 May 1606,
he killed, possibly unintentionally, a young man from
Terni (Umbria). The circumstances of the brawl and the
death of remain mysterious but it is said that X in an
inebriated state challenged the young man to a duel
and killed him. Ultimately, a death warrant was issued for
him by the Pope but X managed to successfully flee to
Palermo. Three years later, in an attempt to get back to
his homeland, X painted a self-portrait and was granted
a pardon for his sins. However, X died on the way in
Naples (or murdered). What did X paint ?
Caravaggio painted David with the head
of Goliath, with his own face as Goliath’s
"If the stars should appear one night in a
thousand years, how would men believe and
adore, and preserve for many generations the
remembrance of the city of God!“. The above
quotation was introduced to X by his editor,
who was himself an author of repute in the
same genre, in 1941. Inspired by the above, X
went on to base one of his most famous short
stories Y on the quote. Y was then adapted
into a full-fledged novel in 1989 by X, a few
years before his death. Identify X and Y.

The name for the machine originated in
the 1770s among soldiers in British India in
reference to shooting X, which was
considered a challenging target for
marksmen. The term X was first attested in
1824 in the sense of the word
"sharpshooter". Vigorous military training in
camouflaging and holding one’s breath

One of Hercules’ 12 labours of penance
following his sin of slaying his own daughter
was to tame the monstrous beast Cerberus,
significant in Greek mythology for guarding
the gates to hell. However, the credit for
accomplishing this task went to Orpheus who
– with his prime talents – found a way to
silence the beast like nobody had prior to him,
which served as the inspiration for an
important plot point in popular culture roughly
two decades ago. How was this beast tamed
in Greek mythology? What similar act of
taming did Orpheus’ method inspire?
Orpheus played music for it.
The taming of Fluffy in Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer’s Stone
X is one of those rare filmmakers who is
unabashedly vocal of his inspirations and had
once famously remarked ' I steal from every
movie made'. So it was not surprising when a
few years ago, a certain animated flashback
in one of his most famous films was apparently
inspired from an Indian film. And when Anurag
Kashyap met X at Venice, the latter had
reportedly remarked 'Yes, I saw this Indian
serial-killer film which showed violence as
animated.‘He then used the concept of
violence being animated in one of his very
famous films(English). ID X, the Indian and

The origins of X are mythical. Unlike most Vedic
sages, he has neither a human mother nor a
father. According to Hindu scriptures, his
miraculous birth follows a yajna being done by

overwhelmed by her extraordinary sexuality,
and ejaculate. Their semen falls into a mud
pitcher, which is the womb in which the fetus
of X grows. This mythology gives him the
name kumbhayoni, which literally means "he
