• MRS HANSEN ANNOUNCES THAT THE TAVERN OWNED BY HANNAH SCHERMER'S
PARENTS HAS BEEN VANDALISED
• TO INSTILL GOOD VALUES IN HER STUDENTS,SHE ENCOURAGES THEM TO SIGN A
CARD EXPRESSING THEIR SYMPATHY FOR HANNAH AND HER FAMILY.MRS IS
SHOCKED AT THE PROTESTS BY MORE VOCAL STUDENTS AND THE CULTURE OF
FEAR CREATED BY CLASS BULLIES,WHICH STOPS SOME SINCERE STUDENTS
FROM SIGNING.ONLY RICHARD HAS THE INTEGRITY AND COURAGE TO SIGN
• AFTER A STRAINED CLASS LESSON,RICHARD APPROACHES HIS TEACHER AND
ASKS FOR THE CARD SO THAT HE CAN PERSONALLY DELIVER IT TO THE
SCHEMERS'.
• RICHARD IS UNFAZED BY THE TAUNTS FROM FELLOW STUDENTS HE IS ASSAULTED
BY ABNER AND HARRY BUT MANAGES TO WIN THE FIGHT.

the schemers even though he is the only to do so and has
to face the class bullies later.

Richard has a problem in fitting with society.Having a
quiet,sensitive nature,he likes to be alone and daydream
rather than play sports.

being kind to others when they are facing difficulty reveals
the basic goodness of man,and underlines our humanity.
hence,when the schemer'Ts tavern was vandalised,Mrs
Hansen asks her class to sign a card of sympathy,the whole
class disobeys except Richard
